Flying this Friday 21 Oct ?

Post by markc »

Looks like strong SW on Thursday after the bad weather blows through, but then a possibility of some WNW on Friday. Seems like it might be Woodstock-type winds (for HG) earlier in the day, and then possibly backing off later. I put in a solid day of work this past Saturday, so I shouldn't have much of a problem bailing outta work if these forecasts pan out. Anyone else thinking of some avant-weekend airtime?

I'm still interested in Friday, because I will probably be on the road this weekend... At the moment, it looks like the Pulpit will be blown out, and that it could be on the light side (for HG) at Woodstock as the day goes on, plus cross from the West.

Still thinking of giving it a try though... What say you Tom & Jon, are you still looking at it?

I'm still interested too.... Leaning towards getting there fairly early, given the 3k forecast. I'll be checking conditions tomorrow AM, 7:30-ish. If things haven't substantially changed by then I'll probably give it a go. Should be some pretty good fall color by now!

Still in, after this AM's weather check, and given that I won't be flying this weekend....
Jon & John, what are you thinking?

Flying: Good!

Colors: Great!

Mostly cloudy, gray day at Woodstock, significantly west-cross. Jon, John M, Steve K, and myself. I flew for 2+ hours, and tried to get some footage of the fall color. In spite of the lack of sun, some of it turned out ok, and I'll try to put something together relatively soon (still on the learning curve). Jon was unlucky and sledded, but John and Steve had soaring flights. Some bald eagles, redtails, and other birds out there, very fun day!

Hit the road for Pgh after flying, so looks like I'll miss out on what could be a good Pulpit day. Hope everyone has great flights! Get high and fly far!

Tough day for me at Woodstock yesterday. Arrived to 100% cloud cover and a pretty significant west cross. Wind speed in the slot was fairly light with some stronger cycles coming through but they were mostly strong out of the west when the speed picked up.
Mark started us off with a nice launch.....he headed left into the cross wind but didn't look like he found much of any kind of lift as he came cruising back by at right around launch height heading for the north finger......looked like thats where he initially got up at.
SO.....I launched not long after....waiting in the slot a bit for some stronger west gusts to die down (they were hitting the trees in the bottom right of the slot and rebounding off of them making the streamers look like the air was coming out of the NNW!!!!) I had decided after watching Mark that I was going to race over to the north finger right off the bat and get up there........so I did. Had a nice strong launch......turned right and boogied over to the north finger...maintained altitude for the most part but was not going up. Started getting tossed around quite a bit and had a pretty jerky ride all the way over to just before the north finger. The turbulence (the west cross bouncing off everything and me being downwind of it and down low close to the terrain) made me move further away from the ridge....and probably sealed my fate. I turned and headed back to launch for a short bit but was finding nothing but disturbed west cross turbulated air and was going down...not up. After a few short minutes, in which I never really felt I got established in the flight, it was time to land  had a bumpy ride out and a nice landing in the primary.
Shoulda turned left , into the wind and tried to stair step myself up to get established in the flight first. Lessons learned....keep em coming :)
Heading to the Pulpit today to try and do better.
