Flying-Site information/visual database forum threads

Post by Ward Odenwald »

After reading markc’s description of his flight yesterday and viewing his photos of Gary’s Beach which are, arguably, the best visual representation of the Calvert Cliffs site thus far, I realized that his description and photos are an invaluable information source to those who will fly there. Although SteveK entitled this forum thread “Calvert Cliffs” which is searchable and would lead to markc’s photos and Gary’s post warning about the chiggers, many of our posts that contain important info about flying sites lack the necessary key words to quickly locate them. For example, many of our thread headlines are dates and not labeled with specific flying sites. Given that most, but not all, of our posts contain descriptions of our flying sites including videos and/or photos - important (albeit time sensitive) information, we should consider including a link on the “post a reply” page that enables the author to post his/her comments on the form that they are replying to and, in addition, submit a copy of it to a specific Flying-Site forum thread that is dedicated to that site and can be accessed via another link on the forum index. Gary’s beach is probably not the best example, but many of our sites are flown frequently enough by pilots that post descriptive and visual information about the sites including LZ conditions. Having quick access to this info without having to do multiple searches will help the next pilots that fly that site. For example, if you were considering flying Bills Hill soon, by accessing the “Bills Hill” thread you would find multiple descriptions/views/videos of the site, including recent landing approach videos (Jesse’s video of his recent flights are a good example of the current LZ conditions). Another good example is how DanTuck has organizes his videos by flying sites. By accessing Tuck’s McConnellsburg/Pulpit videos, one can view multiple landing approaches into both the primary and secondary LZs. Although Dan’s videos are dated, they are still extremely useful to new and/or visiting pilots.
