This topic describes the sign up procedure for the new CHGPA forums at
chgpa.org . It's a bit long because I've provided some background info
that may be helpful to some pilots. But don't worry, there are just a
few steps, all pretty quick and painless.
If you plan to use our new forums only via email (just like with the
old chga listserv at folkriver.com) then you really do have to review
this info, particularly Step 3.
If you have any questions about these instructions, or find an error,
send me an email at:
markc@chgpa.org
For a discussion of why we want to move away from the old folkriver.com
listserv and a description of how the new CHGPA forums work, see:
http://chgpa.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=136

Step #1 : Register, creating your own personal CHGPA forum account.

Go to : http://chgpa.org/forums

Click on the "Register" icon near the upper-right.

On the resulting registration screen, you must provide a username,
an email address, and a password.

If you see a field when registering that you don't understand
(ICQ, AIM, etc), just leave it alone.

When finished, click the Submit button at the bottom of the
registration page. That's it for Step 1!

Note : Do not choose a forum password that you are already using for
something important, like online banking or your account with an
internet service provider, etc. That's just asking for trouble!
Our forums are intended to allow pilots to share their knowledge, ask
for advice, and have fun. Being completely anonymous does not really
gibe with these goals, so we ask that all forum users be somehow
identifiable, even if only to the forum administrator.
How can you do this? In a variety of ways:

By choosing a good username. Perhaps: a nickname that other pilots
know you by; your first name and the initial of your last name; your full
name; I think you get the idea!

By supplying an email address that includes a nickname, first name
and initial, fullname, etc.

By including a nickname, first name and initial, fullname, etc in
the 'Location' field of your personal profile.

You might be asking "What's a Location field?". When you register, you
have the option of providing some information about yourself : hobbies,
your occupation, etc. One of the items you can provide is your geographic
location, which might be something like:
JoeG, Washington DC

Step #2 : Wait for your CHGPA forum account to be activated.
I review all registration requests, basically just to make sure that
something in your profile provides a clue about who you are.
When your account has been activated, you will receive an email indicating
this at the email address you provided during Step (1).
I try to approve registrations within one or two days. But if you register
on a Friday, I might not be able to get to it until Tuesday.

Step #3 : After your account is activated, login to the CHGPA forums and
(if you wish) set up email-delivery for the messages that are posted by
forum members.

Go to : http://chgpa.org/forums

Click on the "Login" icon near the upper-right.

Enter your username and password on the Login screen and
click the "Log in" button.

Congrats! You've made it in! Now what?

Back at the main forum webpage, click on the "Forum Subscriptions"
icon, near the upper-center of the page.

On the resulting screen, you will find a drop-down list of the
email lists associated with each forum in the "New subscriptions"
section.

Use the drop-down menu to pick a forum for which you would like
all posts to be delivered by email, then click the "Subscribe" button
to the right. Repeat this for as many of the forums as you wish.

That's all there is to it! Once you have subscribed yourself to the
various forums, everything will be much like the old listserv at
folkriver.com . Ie, you receive email, and you reply by email.
Those who plan to use just the forum website (no email delivery
of posts) can skip Step #3 completely.
Note that you can choose to subscribe to, say, just the PG Flight-Topics
forum, because you want that forum's content to come to you. You could
then periodically browse the other forums using the website, at your
convenience, picking just those topics that interest you. Best of both worlds!

Step #4 : Note that there is a private FiFi forum for women pilots.
If you wish to join FiFi, you will have to send a PM (personal message)
or an email to the moderator of the FiFi forum, after your registration
has been activated.
If the moderator decides to let you join, you will be able to establish
an email subscription to FiFi (see Step #3). But, unlike the other
forums, this cannot be done until the FiFi moderator has given you her
stamp of approval.
