Flying sunday

We're heading to Karen's family reunion near Clarksburg, WV on Saturday-- hoping to stop and fly somewhere on the way home on Sunday morning--- looks WNW till about 4. Then it's eather NE os SW depending on the forecast model. We may try to hit the Pulpit.

JR-- Are you out there? Are you guys flying on Sunday at Zirk's or Fairgrounds? We will have our PGs.

Arrived around 12:45 finding a thin layer of clouds and a few cumiis (sp?) in the distance. Heard that Tom M and Dave P had towed up earlier and went XC. A bit breezer on the ground but a nice temp. After setting up, Steven K towed up finding very little and landed shortly. Decided to have lunch and wait a bit and the sky cleared some. Tom got back from a short XC and went to retrieve gliders and Dave. Steve and I towed up after 2:00 and conditions had improved. Got some good climbs up to over 5,000 where it was quite chilly and some pretty big sink coming back toward the field. Got 2:00 of flight time. Tom flew again and others including John S, Christian, tandems and a few others. A very enjoyable flight for me.

A very nice day at the Pulpit. Back at 10:40A to observe Amy on her second flight from the Pulpit. Peter Humes was there with 2 PG students Christa and Jonah?. Amy had a textbook flight with a nice launch and good approach and landing in the secondary. Cumies were popping under a high solid cirrus layer, and there were some blue holes. After Amy's flight I just leisurely set up as PGers arrived: Tom Cuenen, Matt Ingram, Peter, Matthew, Karen, Dan. And lo and behold who arrives but the Gardinator. Matthew launched his paraglider first and fought the good fight for around a half hour before succumbing to gravity. Tom launched second and bobbed up and down from ridge level to a couple hundred over. Jon decided to give it a go and got a sledder to the secondary. Peter launched his PG and after a good struggle got up. Tom then got 1K+ over as the sky opened up and sun hit the whole McConnellsburg valley. By this time it was 2P, and the switch was thrown on launch. It ramped up to 12 to 18 MPH. The Gardinator went off of the old ramp and got up easy. Carlos followed suit and did the same. I was third off the old ramp and got up out in front to a couple hundred over. Searched out in the valley and about 15 minutes later got in a good one over the biker bar and climbed to 5K' MSL and headed OTB with some nice clouds downwind. Was at 4300' MSL next to Broad Mountain where I had to zig to the north a long way to nice clouds or zag to the ESE to closer but not as nice looking clouds. I zagged (as did the Gardinator) and did not find much and landed nicely in a huge uphill field next to the little hamlet of Stonebridge for about 12 miles XC after a 40 minute flight. Carlos made it about 10 miles, landing SSE of St. Thomas, and the Gardinator made it around 15 miles to just north of Greencastle on Rt. 11. Amy and Jon brought Carlos' vehicle to him at his LZ, then contacted me and met up with me at my LZ. Carlos got Mark, then came and got me after a little struggle with his Garmin NUVI GPS. We (Carlos, Mark, and I) went back to launch as Amy and Jon hit the road. We transferred equipment and got some well deserved eats and refreshments at the biker bar. Pics later. Bacil

We got to the Pulpit around 12:30-- a few PG pilots and Amy had flown earlier. I launched and got 26 miutes of mostly scratching on the ridge. While I was flying Matt Ingram launched his PG from the pipeline cut-out on Route 16 and sledded to the LZ. That's a first!!! Jon then launched his HG just in time for it to deck over and shut down. After I landed the sun came out and Tom C and tall Peter launched and got up. Peter landed about 20 minutes later and Tom had a nice long flight. Gardinator, Carlos and Bacil all lauched HGs, eventually getting high and going over the back-- Gardinator got the highest and furthest with 5800msl to Greencastle. Winds ramped up to 20-25 so we PGers waited till almost 4pm with Lazlo going and then me and then Dan T. Lazlo and I each got about an hour in our PGs and landed because it had started to rain. Ellis jumped off just in time to beat the rain and fly to the Primary LZ.

I got a good look at that cut-out from the air during my last soaring flight at the Pulpit and have been wondering if anyone ever launched from there.

Had a great night sleep in the tent and woke up ready to fly!! First off congrats to Amy for a sweet flight to start the day off right...WAY TO GO GIRL!!! Great to meet Jono and Krista and good to see you Peter. To keep my flight story of the day short and simple I have just a few words: I launched an hour too soon Looked like it might be on....but it wasn't. Broke down and headed back up......could have set up and flown again but decided not to. Was happy with the weekend as it was and went into retrieval mode with Amy instead. Picked up Carlos and then made our way over to Bacil. Big Congrats to Bacil, Carlos and Mark for some nice high flying!!!! I'll be joining you OTB soon!!!

The sight of you guys, Gardinator, Carlos and Bacil, specking out under those big black clouds was really impressive. I really thought one or more of you would be calling for a retrieve from east of Gettysburg. While they didn't turn out to be the big XCs I was hoping you'd get, they still looked like really fun flights.
