Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
Glen Hardy has been up at High Rock all day today laying out the groundwork for the walk up ramp up to the launch. I just got off the phone with him ( 8:15pm ) as he was returning home. He's been busting buns and has informed me that the "project" is a bit more involved than originally anticipated. So.....two things:
ONE: We need volunteers for tomorrow. I know...short notice but it is what it is. Contact Glen on his cell phone at: 443-414-5175 and let him know if you can volunteer some time either Friday or Saturday. Yeah...it conflicts with the fly in but the weather ain't lookin' too pretty for the Pulpit so....if you had the weekend off...maybe you can swing by HR and lend a hand. BUT...I'd recommend calling Glen to find out what up before you head up. Glen is going to be up there at 10am. I'm sure he'll be there for hours.
TWO: Glen says he under-estimated the costs. I kinda figured but.... LOOKIT; we need to do this. So...everybody that said they'd pony up some cash....please come thru. And.....clubs; do what we can and.....individuals: lets get some movement going to raise more funds.
THREE: Guilt trip time. Glen is volunteering his time and expertise. High Rock is THE PRIMO site closest to Baltimore, Washington and well......all the other hick towns we live in around here. Its historic. Its super soarable. Its a rare cliff launch site. It has the worlds coolest LZ owners. Its cheap to fly and cool to camp out at. Its on the Appalachian trail and awesome PR for our sport. So....lets support this effort to re-establish this historic site. I'll be there on Saturday. Those who can't....please have your checkbooks armed and ready at the next meeting and/or send in donations to your club. WE NEED TO DO THIS.

Doubling my pledge to 100. Envelope to Carlos is sealed, addressed, stamped, and on the kitchen counter to go out in the morning.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
Great way to celebrate my day today at Highland! I'm writing a check for $100 as well - will be in the mail tomorrow. Unfortunately I sorry to say that I can't provide labor tomorrow or Friday.

I see your $100 and raise you $100. - Hugh
Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
I'm in to supply labor saturday but need to find a place to stay, so certain people can expect a call. Who/what do we make the check out to?

Brian,
You had better come see me while you are in town. That's an order.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
Just talked to Glen. He says what they're doing right now is just framing and pouring some initial cement, so doesn't need any more people than what he's got. Sometime next week they'll be doing the major pouring, then may need help carting cement up the hill.
The design will be steps about 5 feet wide, 7 inches per step so it will be easy to walk up.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
Spoke with Glen Saturday. He was exhausted from putting in 28 hours of work on the HR project Thursday and Friday. Project going well. Glen said he will need help one day next week with additional pouring of concrete. Not sure which day but watch the weather and figure it will be on a clear, dry day. Maybe Wed. or Thursday? I asked him to give as much advance notice as possible.
New member Mark K. from Philly drove to HR Saturday for shits and giggles. Said the work being done looks top notch. I advised him to take pictures. I found out later Glen has been taking pictures of before and after just in case we have to prove that work being done is being done properly. In fact; Glens' assistant is making sure that the steps are to Md. code. I suggested that the finished product should attempt to blend as "naturally" as possible with the exsisting landscape so as not to be an eye sore to somebody. Using existing stone or possibly a flagstone type top in the concrete to make it "blend" with the surroundings moreso than just cement. All attempts will be made to make it look very "natural". Considering the state its in now...anything will be not only a cosmetic improvement, but safer too for all involved..including spectators.
The call for donations is being met enthusiastically too. Please keep the energy on this going so it lessens the impact on the club(s) pocketbooks. And....if possible try and come out this week to lend a hand with short notice. Again; contact Glen on number previously given out and coordinate with him if possible. Thanks.
Cheers!

Was up at High Rock today. Was in the neighborhood so...
Anyway...looks good. Hope the locals don't tear out the forms. Allot of work just sitting there. Was raining when I left.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
I truly wish I could have been there on Thurs/Fri to help with this project, but unfortunately I had a long-standing family event that couldn't be changed. My hat is off to Glen, and although the only help I can provide is a monetary contribution, I hope that it will be of some assistance and support! Maybe once I'm back in town I'll be able to offer some more concrete help (oh, that was bad, sorry!) with the remaining tasks.

Glen for (U.S.) President in 2016! He's the only candidate with a concrete platform! - Hugh
Seriously, it's wonderful that we have members with the skills and initiative to "git 'er done". Dan Tuck's plan was good but, when that fizzled, Glen stepped in with his own and showed that there's more than one way to skin a cat. Now Gary Devan is pushing through to a way forward on Coffee Pot Lane and the gulch to the LZ. Good things are happening!

“Glen said he will need help one day next week with additional pouring of concrete. Not sure which day but watch the weather and figure it will be on a clear, dry day. Maybe Wed. or Thursday?”
I took a look at the stairs yesterday and “steps” doesn’t do them justice. they look hOt , baby. you could imagine Miss America posing at the back edge of the ramp, back lit with a royal blue sky, strolling elegantly down them, scepter in hand. they look that good.
there wAs a ton of work put in to building the forms already - a full outline shell, complete with rebar. aNd the old steps had to be demoed and moved out of the way first - something the “locals” hadn’t been able to accomplish these many years!
if the concrete - there will be a LOT- is going to be wheelbarrowed up(really?!) - well, it looks to be a stupendous amount of labor…

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
as i'd noted elsewhere, my hump done been busted so i'll not be able to do any heavy lifting, but maybe i'll show up anyway, i know how to finish concrete (even have some tools) so perhaps i could be of some assistance.
as soon as someone gets wind of which day it will be, i suppose they would post it here(?).
considering how bad those steps have been, and how long they've been bad, and if Glen could really use the help, i'd go so far as to say that it wouldn't be unreasonable for anyone to consider taking a day off work if they possibly could.
the past efforts by the club members to put not only the current ramp('been there, 'done that) in place but the previous ramps as well - well it was no stroll in the park, they payed their dues without doubt. so, as Richard said, it's good that people are stepping up in what ever fashion they can.
sorry if i sound preachy, 'just trying to give my support to the fact that this is really a big deal.

I think that the concrete truck is now scheduled for Saturday. It is 8 yds so the more hands and buckets we have the better.
Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
Gary,
Could a concrete truck be horsed in close enough to use a long tray to pour directly into the forms?

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
you know, i just deleted a post saying something about that, saying that that sure would be nice but that i certainly wasn't going to second guess Glen - nosiree, no way, know how, know how, no way, nosiree. one look at those forms and you Know that this is professional work done by professional people. (that wasn't so much for you, HUgh, as it was for Glen).
but if it were to be a question of paying extra money for a truck so equipped, and it's not a standard rig as far as i know, then yeah, someone might want to write an extra check.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
"HUgh" was just a slip of the finger, doesn't mean anything.
garyDevan
Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
and here's what i mean by not second guessing Glen - one would consider the cost and necessity of such a rig (and it could be pricey and i wouldn't know the necessity) relative to the cost and availability of labor and the difficulty of the work. he's the pro and would make his call, but he might be looking to save the club money. i wouldn't know, but you asked me to speculate.

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
come to think of it, what they'll probably do is use a chute to dump the stuff onto the ground as close as possible, then people would schlepp it to the forms with barrows and buckets. possibly/probably.
i'm done, really, i gotta get outta here.

Does anyone know if the concrete pour is scheduled for Saturday?

Re: Urgent! High Rock News-READ NOW
I just spoke with Glenn. No concrete pour tomorrow (Saturday). He and another guy are doing some more form work tomorrow with the plan of the big pour being maybe Wednesday or Thursday.
