Highland Thursday
I had a red letter day at Highland today! And yet my longest flight was only about 24 minutes! Why am I thrilled? It will come as no surprise to all who know Hugh that even in his temporarily disabled state he is nurturing the development of pilots. Having been my observer on numerous mountain flights, while talking last week he suggested I ought to be pulling out the syllabus and going over material to study for the H3 exam. He further pointed out that he doesn’t need to be the one to observe my spot landings, another pilot could and I might be well served to do some pattern tows at Highland. It was just the nudge I needed.
When I arrived at about noon the field was quiet – morning flights were over and the tug was back in the hanger. Tandem pilot Steve said there hadn’t been much lift so far, but that was fine with me. If I didn’t find lift, I would be more than happy to do pattern tows and practice spot landing. As I was setting up, Steve K arrived. My first flight, a full tow, was my longest of the day – there was some light lift. I made a nice landing close to my spot (marked with my bright orange crocs) and called Steve over to see, and asked if he could make note of my landings (if he wasn’t in the air himself). He took off before my second flight, more effectively handled the thermals than I, so when I landed he was still in the air. I decided then to change to pattern tows. By now Jon and Amy, along with Bacil had shown up, and my 3d flight, 1st pattern tow, was nice and close to my target, but was a belly landing . I was concentrating on the spot and looking down and didn’t flare well. 4th flight I came in nicely and close to the spot – which Bacil and Steve K (back on the ground now) both saw. So I asked Bacil to also keep on eye on me; I would try two more pattern tows before I called it a day – and either that would give me the three in a row or not. And it worked! Both Steve K and Bacil were on hand to verify I got my 3 spot landings! I tore down and was heading out by about 5:30pm. Jon and Amy were still enjoying flights when I left.
So! Thanks to Bacil and Steve K for checking out my landings, and to Hugh for kicking my butt a bit to get serious about working on the requirements.

Valerie,
This is great! If you have the hours/flights etc. lets set up a time early next week and I'll give you the H3 test. You other "senior" H2s (Jon, Jesse), look at your logbooks vs. the H3 requirements and "git 'er done". In addition to hours/flights, what we want is the ability to relate predicted weather to flying site selection, ability to judge conditions on-site, and experience at a variety of our local sites in different conditions.
Once you are H3, guard against "H3 syndrome". Never fly alone (my experience last month demonstrates why).
(Flying XC is an important exception - ya need to be confident that you can land well in a field you selected and inspected from the air, but may have never landed before. Be in comms with someone and tell them where you are before you land - radio works better than on the ground.)
Confer with your colleagues about conditions - there's always more to learn. When visiting a new site, seek out a site intro and local knowledge. And then...help out the new guy coming up behind you!

Had a great day at Highland!
I did three flights- 1 at 2500' and 2 pattern tows (800').
My best landing had to be my last pattern tow... Bacil was standing in the field as my 'spot'. Wouldn't you know it... you can see that yellow hat from 800' up in the air!!! I landed RIGHT where he (was) standing (he had to move a few feet back so I didn't plow him ) I have never come so close to a target before... it felt really good
Thanks to Adam for another great day at the park... good tows and good advice (as usual).
And, thanks to Bacil for coming out to spend the day with Jon and I! It was really nice to have you there!

Re: Highland Thursday
Congrats Valerie!!
Warm sunny day out at Highland....but without all the nice puffy cummies from a few days earlier All the same had a fun day. Tried to work some really light lift over to the SSE but lost out both times. Had a nice cold beer and a pulled chicken sandwich with Bacil and Amy afterward....good day!

Re: Highland Thursday
I was at Highland to give Amy a chance to fly and take a supportive role in her return to the mountains. Every time Jon and I fly at the mountains Amy is in the support role. It was time to pay her back. It was good to see her almost land on top of me. With some more practice, practice, practice judging the angles and adjusting accordingly for the conditions, we will see her in the mountains when she's ready. It was good also to witness Valerie get her 3 spot landings. She wouldn't let the tug rest until she got it done. Congratulations Valerie.
