Plans for Sun10July

Post by markc »

Looks like light 5-10NW in the mts, and 10W or 10NW
(depending on who you believe) out on the Eastern Shore....
What are people planning? I'm leaning toward Highland
at the moment.

I saw the NW in the mountains listed on several weather sites also (WU and NOAA), but AccuWeather is calling for ESE at Hagerstown, and that is backed up by the realtime report from the USWX station at Hagerstown ( and Launch code says it is all over the place).

I'm probably headed for a flight park - though I could use more time of the training hills for landing practice.

Got 20 minutes at Pulpit on Sat 7/9, launched at 6:45 into 12-15 mph with cross from the north, but the phenomenal lift from earlier in the day pretty much died at that point, and it was a scratchy 20 minute flight, at best only 200 over but most in the 100 over launch range. Scratching is an interesting learning experience.

Launch could have used more of a run, but I was lifted up immediately and had no traction for a run. Approach was good but didn't go upright soon enough and couldn't pull off the flare for anymore than a light belly flop. - Linda

I think I'll head to Highland... Blipmap isn't promising,
but it's been wrong before! ;-)

It was a good day at Highland Aerosports, though not a major
XC day.... I had a mid-day flight around 2:00 or so, topping
out around 3k AGL for about an hour. Larry H, Paul T, Ric,
and PK headed downwind, for 6 or 7 miles. PK got 14.

I stuck around because the lift was so light. Other pilots included
Carlos, John S, Paul A, Tom M, Dave P, Christian, Tad, Christy,
Hugh, Steve K and more; lots of sailplanes too, pretty busy at times!

McGowan probably had FOTD from the standpoint of duration : first
one up, and didn't come back down for at least 2 hours.

I had a second flight around 5:00; super light lift, maybe 25 minutes
or so. Back-to-back weekends with soaring on both days, wow,
when's the last time that's happened?

The day was capped off with a great sunset, and a happy, though
tired, Highland crew (lots of tandems!). Definitely worth the drive....
