USHGA name change: a CLOSE race!

Post by brianvh »

Positive. We had a long discussion about it over a bottle of wine a few
weeks ago. He thought the chgpa people were just close minded (despite his
comment to mike Ballentyne), but after some effort I finally convinced him
the refusal to listen to his arguments or his speaker was
because he shot himself in the foot by pushing topic too hard. But
yeah, Rich was originally strenously against powered flight, but then
decided the best way to lay fences was to join with the neighbor who will
share the fence.

name change

Post by dhenders »

I remember sitting around in the desert with a bunch of fools trying to decide what to call our hang gliding club. We had hang gliders, rigid wings, ultralights, soarmasters, even land sailers. We all were reading Ground Skimmer and that didn't seem right. I do favor a generic name since I think new things, at least I hope, are always going to appear and people with the same mindset as ours are going to try them out. Personally I am not a big fan of power but I could careless if some one flies an ultralight and I sure don't encourage govt intervention. That 's why I have always liked Free Flight. Could care less what the organization is called.

Name Change

Post by Matthew »

Should we pander to all new groups when they come along? Maybe just some? But which ones?

If the tables were turned, as a HG pilot, I would not join a related sport and expect them to change the name of 'Their' org. just to pander to my 'feelings' of inclusion. As I see this whole fiasco, it comes down to nothing more than 'Political Correctness'.

********

FYI-- PG pilots constitute over 40 percent of the USHGA membership... and that number is on the rise.

As to the next thing that comes along-- USHGA was formed in 1974 because it was an association based in the US for hang glider pilots-- hence the name. Paragliding has been part of USHGA since 1994. It's not something that has recently come along. It has been part of USHGA for 11 years and for one third of the time USHGA has been around. As to political correctness, I hate political correctness. This has nothing to do with political correctness. As Daniel B. pointed out, orginzations are named after the activities performed by the members. Our parent orginization is constituted by hang glider pilots and paraglider pilots and has been so for the last 11 years. The name should reflect this fact.

Also FYI-- no one is expecting or telling USHGA to change its name. The USHGA web poll isn't a vote to change the name. It's a poll to see if a enough members wish to put a proposed name change on the ballot.

Please, fellas... it's "Eunice"!
By the way, I think the choice we're being offered is pretty lame.
USHGPA is too much of a mouthful. Apparently a previous round of
polling that offered a more euphonious name like "U.S. Free Flight
Association" - failed... - Hugh

Hugh,

Actually its worse that that. What we are being offered is USHPA, not USHGPA. :) (See http://www.ushga.org/ballot3_results.asp) I agree, USFFA seems more appropriate.

Shawn, Thanks for seeing the lightheartedness in this. :)

Rance

PS: Hugh, I'm sure there's someone out there that's spelled it Unice

Ha! The margin is narrowing! The race is getting closer! Latest results:
Current name: 409
New name: 417

A mere 8 votes' difference---doesn't sound much like a consensus to me! :D (I'm just having fun with it---and as Shawn said, truly don't care that much.)

Brian, Hugh, and I'm sure others,

Where do you guys come up with these words? Euphonious? I had to look this one up too. You see, I'm not as cultured as some of you fine pearls. I'll bet you have a college dictionary on your desk just waiting to use some of these high-falutin words. :) Do you ACTUALLY use these in everyday language? I've never heard anyone use them out at the mountain sites, or at the flight park. You really crack me up. :D

During routine elocution I tend to be more parsimonious with my
word-hoard. It may have something to do with the cacophany of the our
silvan sites in contrajuxtoposition with the silent throb of the office.

in the spirit of "Latoya", et al. - but Eunice is NOT a made-up name -
it's Greek: "beautiful victory" - so not subject to ad lib spelling.
People can name their kids anything they want: Oxydol was a kid in
Appalachia a generation ago; James Coxey, the social reformer who lead
"Coxey's Army" to demand unemployment relief in the 1890's, had a son
named Legal Tender... - Hugh

Yup. Too much classical education. Don't use spell-check either - it
doesn't know as many words as I do. This does not get me more pay or a
fancier title. So far as I can tell, the only use for this knowledge
is to force highly-trained engineers to keep [Oxford Unabridged]
dictionaries on their desks... - Hugh
