How to start Aerotow

Post by cthornberger »

Now that I have my h-2, I would like to start taking steps to get my AT rating. I'm also looking to not spend a fortune :-$.
Highland is very close (and open!), and it would be great to support them as well, so I'm wondering if there is a cost-efficient way to go about it there?

How did some of you do it?

Chris,

The guys at Highland are straight shooters. Go out there and discuss your goals. They will want at least one tandem tow, maybe more. This will definitely open up your flying options. Good luck.

That's once you solo. The fact that you have your own gear cuts the cost in half then. - Hugh

I can't speak for Sunny and Adam; there will be a certain number of tandems, which will be at the lower instructional rate (not what they charge for discovery flights). Also, some may be pattern tows to lower altitude, hence cheaper. Once they solo you, that's essentially it - maybe a couple flights in various winds to confirm your skills? Ask them, let 'em know you are on a budget. - Hugh

like everything in hang gliding, packing in as much learning as quick as possible means fewer lessons. I'd suggest keeping your eyes peeled for an entire weekend of low wind. Then go camp out.

Let Sunny and Adam know your plans, probably by going up to take a tandem on a less than ideal weekend and hanging out after flying is over. Adam likes dark beer; a sixpack will let him know you are making a thoughtful investment in the relationship. Not sure what Sunny's preferences are, maybe a sampler pack will do.

Oh, and when scheduling the first lesson, let them know you are a new H2 looking to get tow rated. They will put you in for the morning or evening so you can get acclimated.

Since you are already a H2, it won't be nearly as expensive as starting from scratch. Talk to Highland, they will set you up.
