Vario

I think I'm ready to start experimenting with a vario. Doesn't have to be a fancy competition type.
Gary Smith... you mentioned you had one... ??

I have some older used ones and you are welcomed to borrow one. If you go flying on Sunday and is where I happen to be going, I could bring one for you. Let me know.

make sure that the one you end up buying has a sound you find pleasant. With any luck you'll be hearing a lot of it. :)

Most of the recent models may have more than you need; so long as an older one indicates ascent in a way you find intuitive and keeps some simple stats (like max altitude and time of flight) you may not need much else for a while. But they last forever, so don't pare down your requirements too much.

You will learn to LOVE whatever sound it makes when you are going UP. Could be the drone sound of a bagpipe, armpit fart noises, nails on blackboard. Pavlovian conditioning. Some people have vario ringtones on their cellphones. - Hugh

I know... how about an eagle's call! That would be cool. :)

Hi Ann; Yes, I have a vario that you can have. Probably early 80s beeper but still works. I will carry it in my truck from now through the spring flying season and hope to run into you sometime. BTW, heading to WS tomorrow afternoon. (Fri. 3-18-11) if youu can make it. Gary

I would also like to hop on this band wagon ;). I'm currently looking at the flytecs for the nearish future, but anything that makes a noise would be helpful for the meanwhile and so on.
Any points to some used/ older ones?
