A great day's 'adventure' at Eagle Rock

A great day's 'adventure' at Eagle Rock
Eagle Rock is a site near Roanoke that I found while looking up sites in VA through the USHPA site back in November. It is the only site listed in VA in the members only section. It is managed by the Skywackers, also known as the Southwestern VA HG an PG. Anyway, I joined the club so I could fly this site, which is less than 2 hours from Harrisonburg. Richard Cobb is, like, the only hang glider pilot in the club! The rest are PG. If you want to fly ER, you need to be a member of USHPA (of course), join the club (it's $20), get on the roster, and contact Richard. You will need to fly with someone from the club who can get the key to open the gates to launch. The road to launch is 4wd gravel road, an easier drive up than Daniels. The site has two launches: a NW launch and a SE launch. I'm told the SE side get's the most use due to a more prevalent wind direction. However, the NW side is good for getting higher. There are (light) days that both side are flown. There is also talk of opening an alternate NW launch.
I e-mailed Richard Cobb last night to see on the off-chance if ER would be flyable
today. Boy did it turn out to be! Met Richard in the LZ at 11am, walked LZ,
and drove up to take a look at the launches.
We set up our HG's and I elected to go first so I could have his help on launch.
The air was quite buoyant and plenty of ridge and thermal lift. ESE with plenty
of SE cycles; at 6-8 +mph.
I don't usually fly with a vario and Richard offered, but I decided that it was
better to keep it simple since this was my first flight at this site, and fly
without one. My first flight was a sled to the Lz and my landing was perfect.
Richard launched and had an nice soaring flight. Larry Dennis (president of Skywakers club) showed up soon after.
After landing, Richard said he would help me get a 2nd flight if I wanted. Even
though it was getting close to the time I needed to leave, it sounded like with
his and Larry's help it would be possible. After setting up and inspecting my
glider, I decided to go to my car to get some water and a quick snack to refuel.
I looked down at the ground and noticed that one of my tires was almost flat!
Larry and Richard took care of it, driving it down the mtn. and putting on the
spare, while I got my second flight! There was so much thermal lift, I would
have liked to have stayed and played longer, but I needed to get going. I had a
good landing, although had to run it out a little. Larry and Richard helped me
get everything packed up.
Made lots of phone calls to arrange someone to pick up my child from
after-school care. Then had to find a place that could fix/replace my tire.
Found some nice folks in Buchanan who repaired it for 7.50! It turned out to be
a piece of a screw about a half inch long. Got back on the road and made it
home by 6:15p. All's well that end's well.
Thank you so much Richard and Larry for all your help! I had an AWSOME DAY!
Look forward to next time!

Ya, I've been a lurker on Skywackers' list for awhile. Been thinking about going to their fly-in 10-12 June. Flew trike today. - Hugh
Re: A great day's 'adventure' at Eagle Rock
sounds like a fun day! what is the AGL of the launch?

The SE side is 925' agl, the NW side is about 1275' agl.
That's cool, I didn't know you had a trike, Hugh. It turned out to be such a beautiful day to fly! The forecast had called for ever-increasing cloudiness throughout the day. The morning started off cloudy and it even looked like rain, but then the sun started peaking out and before long there was blue sky, high cirrus and smooth winds. Gotta love those pre-frontal days...

Re: A great day's 'adventure' at Eagle Rock
Ann, I don't know how far you are from Lynchburg, VA, but there is (or was) a SE/NW launch near there called Tobacco Row (or Road?) that used to get flown a good bit. I flew there one weekend many years ago (1989-ish), but only flew off the SE side. Both sides had a ramp, but the one on the SE side was in better shape. Greg Mick is/was the local guy, but I haven't heard his name mentioned in a long time, so he may not be flying anymore. It was about 800' and the SE side had a nice LZ that wasn't too far away. The NW side had a small bailout-LZ, but it was in a narrow valley and on the lee side of a big mountain, so it was more of a "get-up and go OTB"-kinda place. John Harper had some good flights from there a few years back.

Thanks JR,
Yes I have talked with Greg. I was trying to arrange some aerotowing with him (before Woodstock 10/31/10). He does a little teaching but mostly he is working a 9-5 durring the week. I think he mentioned Tobacco Row, I think he said that one side had been closed due to development in the LZ below, or something. I'm not sure which side it was. My impression was that the availability of the other launch was also in quesiton. I could check on that again and see what Greg says. Maybe a fun little field trip out there to see it sometime...

Well I was going to try to post a picture or two that Richard took of my launch/flight, but couldn't figure it out. Here is a link to the photo galery. If you click on one of the pictures and start scrolling, you will get a little movie effect of the launch.

Thanks for the great pix! Can't wait to get down there. - Hugh
Re: A great day's 'adventure' at Eagle Rock
Glad you are getting around Ann!
Tobacco Row is a very interesting site...only flown it once in high winds. Pretty much an advanced beginner mountain, but a great group of pilots. You would not believe the field they tow out of, the Highland pilots have NO idea just how good they have it. Wish I was still down far enough south to get another chance to fly there.

That aerotow field is where I did my trike training. Can't imagine towing with a trike out of there... - Hugh
