Pulpit [or Woodstock??], Wednesday, 3/2

Post by hang_pilot »

Starting a new thread to avoid confusion.

Wednesday looks on the strong side, launch early or launch late. I have to work a half day, so will try to fly late, arriving around 3:15. That is, if I'll have some company to help crew. Ward, what's your plan?

Right now, my plan is to be ready to fly at ~11:30 so my ETA will be around 10:30. Early Tuesday evening, I'll post again to confirm.

As of the 9pm Monday forecasts, I'm leaning more toward Woodstock than the Pulpit for Wednesday....

But that's still 36 hours away, so I'm pretty flexible at this point. Bottom line being that Wed looks
interesting enough at this point to potentially take a day of leave; will be watching closely on Tues.

I agree with Mark. Right now, conditions at the Pulpit are trending toward +25 mph at launch on Wednesday and Woodstock's conditions are improving (wind direction and velocity). If the predictions hold, Woodstock is definitely in the run for air-time on Wednesday.

One of the surface 'casts as of Tues PM has been knocked down to W@10-15 for Wednesday, but another is calling solid NW@15, and the 'cast for 3k is still looking pretty strong (ie, 'good strong', for Woodstock). Guess we will have to take a look tomorrow AM and see what's what!

Looks like it will be pre-frontal most of the day, with the front passing through much later than originally forecast. Both Ward and I aren't willing to burn vacation time for a probably-fly-by-late-afternoon type of flight... We'll save it for better conditions.

Some sailplane pilot got his "Diamond Altitude" climbing to 22,500 at Petersburg.

Please don't rub it in! :)

It was a tough call... If we'd been able to go without any concerns about the timing of the front, or thoughts of better spring days ahead, we would have been more willing to gamble.

Oh well!

Yup. The Skyline Soaring group that was planning to trailer a glider to Petersburg last weekend - wimped out. I'm glad because we had such a nice day at Daniel's instead, but it reinforces the iron law that you have zero chance of flying if you don't show up. - Hugh
