High Rock Tuesday, 2/22

Post by sailin »

Hi all,
I know it is a long shot but I figured it can't hurt to ask.......Anybody considering High Rock tomorrow afternoon????? I know it is going to be cold.....And I know it is a Tuesday...........And I don't know how much of a northerly component it can take.......BUT.........anybody considering High Rock tomorrow afternoon??????? Specifically observers
Forecast looks to be cold (high 20's low 30's) and winds look to be NNW (between 340-360 degrees) at around 5-10mph. Maybe some shorter soaring flights????
On the same thought, how much of a northerly component can High Rock take?

thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon!

I appreciate your enthusiasm - and I could observe tomorrow - BUT weather is calling for 3-5 inches of snow/rain/ice, so there might be difficulty getting there. That said, I have participated in the past when air-horny pilots chipped ice off the rock and the wirecrew tied themselves in to avoid sliding off - but that was when it was blowing right in WNW.

If you go to the members-only section of the CHGPA website (if you don't know the login/password, e-mail or PM me and I'll give it to you) and look at the Site Guide. 2nd or 3rd page has some nifty diagrams showing what winds the different sites take. I'm seeing NNE and N tomorrow (let me know if you see something different) for Hagerstown. High Rock takes NNW to WSW.

Finally there's the 3rd difficulty - need a quorum of wirecrew for High Rock.

So, unless (1) it just rains tonight (including up at Thurmont), (2) the forecast comes to more like NW or W, and (3) we get at least 3 and preferably 4 participants - I don't think it's going to happen tomorrow.

Keep trying!

So you're sayin there's a chance!! hahahaha

yeah I figured the odds were stacked up pretty high against it happening. On the USairnet sight for Hagerstown it did look like a NNE but on No Stepper it looked like the winds might be more of a NNW and of course the generic weather sites looked like they were just saying north.

As far as the ice, I will be doing my best rain only dance tonight in hopes of thwarting any snow and ice that may be thinking of coming.....but I'm not too optimistic at this point
Amy is willing to wire crew but that still leaves us a couple of crew members short :(

I do really appreciate your availability and willingness though. I'll check again in the morning but like you said, unless the starts align it isn't looking good.

Thank you though, I am seriously jonesing for some airtime

Well, I've been pinged for a snow day. :)! If the fates and planets agree for the day, and the weather works out -- you can count me in for wirecrew as well. Shoot me a text or a call if things work out by the morning, so I can mobilise...de-snow car.
