It's gonna be a nice warm day on Saturday in the fifties and sunny--- except for this little part--
SATURDAY
SUNNY AND VERY WINDY. COOLER WITH HIGHS AROUND 50.
NORTHWEST WINDS 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH.
What can you possibly do with that kind of forecast???? Cycling-- nope-- kayaking-- nope-- sailing-- nope.
Maybe work on my Marcel Marceau impersonation???
This sounds hypocritical coming from me-- but I'm half temped to go to a flying site just to see the how this kind of wind bends the trees??? Unfortunately (or fortunately) I'm busy mid-day and I really don't want a tree falling on my head!!!! But it's pretty wild to have that fierce of a wind without a tropical storm or a Nor'Easter.

I'm going to study up and take the Ham Radio License test Saturday morning. Then, head down to Woodbridge, Virginia and do some shopping at the Ham Radio Outlet. ..anybody need anything??

Other Sorts Of High Wind Fun…
It was around 1981. Jim Mckinney and I were in his van driving out to Zirk’s (Cumberland) in the early am. It was a real cranking forecast but back in the day, you needed lots of wind to soar. Actually it was a fine line between soarable and blown out (and most times we didn’t know any better.) About 10 miles from Cumberland, we saw Hillary Bird driving the other way on I-70. Both vehicles stopped (no cell phone in those days) and he filled us in that it was unimaginably windy at launch and he was headed back home.
Jim and I followed suit and after a while we were back near Frederick. It was early enough so we decided that we should give Lillipons, a NW training hill SW of Frederick a try. It was still really cranking and as we drove the road to the site, the cross wind was fierce. Jim noted that the van was being blown across the road. Hands off the steering wheel we drifted into the opposite lane. Jim yanked the wheel to realign the van back into our lane. I was relaxing back in the passenger seat eyes at the sunroof and had a perfect view of both Jim and my gliders lift off the van as Jim made his maneuver. I snapped to looking into the rear view to witness both gliders hit the asphalt in unison.
We turned around to claim the sure-to-be wreckage. Only minor sail and wire rash to my Lancer (single surface, flat battens, single deflexor… oh, never mind.) His Seagull Seahawk 4 suffered about the same damage. Turns out he secured the gliders to the roof rack with a single length of polypro line! It must have abraded as the gliders shifted due to the wind, cutting through, and releasing it’s tenants onto an otherwise lonely highway road.
We gathered up the spoils, correctly tied the gilders down, and decided that even Lillypons was outside the scope of do-ability that day.
So yah, one of the things you can do on a day like tomorrow is load up the diver and drive around to check out the roof rack…

It sounds like you could have opened both of them up while they were still tied on. Then you could have flown the van a little. That would have brought a whole new meaning to the term "biwingal".

Looks like a great NW day! I am hitting Woodstock early before it ramps up. Counting on the "Woodstock Effect" to keep it reasonable but I really won't know until I am a thousand over. Got the falcon on the rack, am passing Front Royal right now. These new smart phones are great! I am on launch now and can report conditions live. I found a couple Wuffo's to wire me off. Will report again when I land......

Sounds like good practice towards my H3! I'll let you know when I get up to launch. I got slightly delayed as one of those high-powered gusts knocked my securely fastened glider off the car roof. For a moment I think my car was driving on two wheels! I'd better put some weights on before I continue on.
..on a less facetious note, my ham radio license test went well. I encourage anyone who hasn't taken it yet to give it a try after a bit of studying.
Maybe we can start using those smart phones for aerial comms too.. there's an app for that.
