Smithsburg 1/27 (tomorrow)

Post by sailin »

Hi all,
Amy and I are considering Smithsburg tomorrow. Forecast is "Snow flurries in the early morning will give way to partly cloudy skies during the day. High 31F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph." Looks like current overnight snow accumulation predictions are in the 5-10 inch range. So...if you can't make it to work tomorrow, consider joining us on the hill for some fun :)

I'll check the weather tomorrow morning and make a final decision then. We would be arriving at Smithsburg around noon.

Take a sled! It might be really icy, and if that's the case it's an excellent sledding hill!

Super fun day at Smithsburg!!!! Arrived at about 1130 after a nice greasy spoon breakfast at the Dixie Diner. There was about 6-8 inches of fresh wet snow on the ground......with no tracks in it, just pure white!! I set up a wind sock and some streamers and found the direction W to WNW. At the top it was blowing 8-10 consistently with occasional gusts to 12 or so. The air was buoyant, super smooth( no nasty north in it) and surprisingly not too cold. We set up and went at it.
We each had 3 really nice flights from the top in the smooth air. It was actually pretty difficult to differentiate between the slop and the flat field as you were flying down...the endless smooth white snow created a weird perception. It was a serious workout getting the glider back up the hill in the fresh, slick snow. Every step was plunging through a bit and then slipping back a bit. Definitely a good work out that was much appreciated...its a nice little added bonus to being out there :)
We met some nice local high school students that asked a bunch of questions about hang gliding. Planted some seeds for some potential new pilots :D One of them took a picture of us and our gliders for some project she was doing for school.
Oh, and water proof shoes don't help much if the snow comes in from the top

I'm diggin the Smithsburg winter.....

Today was awesome!!! As Jon mentioned above ^, we had a great time- 3 flights each from the top. The air was perfect... the only thing holding us back from doing more flights was the energy needed to trek up the hill!

Karen- while Jon set up the wind socks, I decided to go for a sled ride. Unfortunately, the snow was so deep, I just sunk! (It would have helped if I had a real sled I think). By the time I was at the bottom of the hill, I was covered in snow... but it was a lot of fun :-)

Here are some pictures from the day- to get an idea of the snowy conditions...

I am EXHAUSTED!!!! After carrying my glider back to the set up/break down area, I had to take a little rest :-)
