Pulpit Sunday 11/28

Post by sailin »

Unfortunately I had to work yesterday and missed out on all the great Woodstock flights. However, thanks to Bacil graciously meeting me at the Pulpit this morning, even though he wasn't flying, my weekend wasn't a total bust. A HUGE THANK YOU to Bacil for coming out and observing me........I really appreciate it!!!

Arrived at 0930 to find mostly straight in winds in the 5-7mph range....with a little north cross in it. It was supposed to change to south at some point so I was happy to see it hadn't happened yet :) Bacil arrived a little after 10am and we decided to wait a bit and let the sun warm the valley up and see if it didn't spur up some thermal activity. There was a period of hope for this as little cummies had formed to the north and east of us. Unfortunately, there wasn't much thermal activity going on over the Pulpit area so around noon I decided to give it a shot. I launched into a nice light cycle coming almost straight out of the west. Judging by cloud movement, winds aloft had seemed to switch more to a westerly as well. Once clear of the mountain I made a couple of turns in some light bumps but nothing seemed to be taking me up so I headed out. I enjoyed a nice sled ride down and landed into a light southwesterly in the secondary LZ. Bacil kindly came down and picked me up.

We both then headed over Smithsburg to cheer Amy on. She was flying like a champ on the training hill with John Middleton and several other students. Beautiful sunny Sunday!

I took advantage of no-wind conditions Sunday to take the trike for a spin at Front Royal. Wore a motorcycle suit and electrically heated gloves. Great visibility! - Hugh

Seems like it would have been a super nice day for a trike ride!! I might have to check out those electric heated gloves you have.......do they have grippy palms and some dexterity?

No, neither grippy nor dextrous - and these'uns want 12 volt power. For unpowered flying, I like the Flytec neoprene gloves with barmitts. Alternatively, there are apparently ski gloves with a place for chemical heatpacks on the inside of the wrist where they heat the blood supply to the fingers. - Hugh
