I'm purchasing a topless glider and have decided to sell my U2. I took delivery from Wills Wing via John Middleton on June 8, 2009, the same day that I tore my ACL and meniscus ground handling a Falcon at Ridgely (bummer!!). During my recovery, the glider was stored fully assembled (except for the tip wands) in my air-conditioned, dry basement (we live on top of a hill and have never had water damage). For the past year, the glider has spent only ~ 4 full days in its bag. When I’m not flying, its assembled it in the hanger (aka basement). Having it stored setup in a dry lighted area allowed me to come up with a way to attach cameras to the outer sprogs (see links below for pics). My first flight with it was on September 3, 2009. Including flights at Ridgely, the Pulpit and Woodstock I have a total of 20 hrs, 54 min of air-time on it. The glider is in excellent condition. Except for a little wear on the reinforced sail tips due to ground handling/setup scrapes and one pencil eraser-size scuff on the pilot’s right side leading edge (due to rubbing up against a down-tube bolt), the glider still looks brand new. The bolt damage was due to my inexperience in folding up the glider and occurred just once. After each flying day, I’m down in the basement cleaning it (I’m not kidding – maybe I should see a shrink about this?). I paid John $4,800.00 for the glider.
In addition to the glider, here’s what comes with it and what I paid John for each item:
Extra control bar (round speed bar that I fly with) - $186.00 (the standard fared control bar with small wheels has never been used)
Extra down-tubes (2) @ $80.00/tube – $160.00
Pneumatic wheels (see photos) and hubs for round base tube - $75.00 for the wheels and $27.00 for the hubs. For me, after a parachute the next best safety device are wheels!
Shipping box – not sure about its cost but shipping and box from CA was $95.00
Extra keel and WW fin (see photo that is posted on the WW web site (in the U2 comments section) ~ $50.00
Custom fin that mounts to the keel with pins. Made by Bruce and Sunny at Highland made for me - $200.00; the fin helps while getting started with towing (reducing adverse yaw). I still fly with it cause it looks neat in the photos (see below).
Two extra control/down tube connecting pins - $30.00 (they’re easy to loose)
Camera mounts for the outer sprogs – no charge.
For everything, I would like ~$3,800.00.
