Hyner for 10/8-11
The weather looks pretty nice for Hyner for this period and the foliage should be turning color. Should be flyable each day and the OX roast party (without an OX) on Saturday evening is great. Marney & I will be arriving on Friday. Come join us for the last Hyner fly-in of the year.

Amy and I will be heading up to Hyner for the weekend......we will probably leave Northern Virginia at about 10am on Sat morning and head home on Monday afternoon. I've seen lots of pictures and video footage of Hyner and cant' wait to see it in person...... and potentially get some airtime too!!
Hope everyone has a great weekend,
Jon

Due to a narrow field and some recent accidents, Hyner requires 10 launches from other sites before flying there. (Amy may not qualify, perhaps Jon does). But even if you don't fly, you'll have a good time. Unfortunately it's too cold for the river.
Visit multiple campfires. Just push your way in and people will take it from there. Saturday night is a group potluck. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

hmmmmmm. concerned about this, I was unaware of the 10 flight rule......wondering if I should wait another weekend when we are qualified to fly because it is a bit of drive up there, and there seems to be some good flying activity going on "locally" this weekend. I was trying to get a hold of John Middleton last night and today to get clarification of this rule but haven't heard back yet. Amy and I are undecided about heading up to Hyner at this point.

Friday was apparently fine earlier in the day but then got a bit windy. Pilots started flying again around 3:30 when there were lighter cycles all the way till sunset. I launched at 5:15 and got 1:05 before deciding to land. Maybe 20+ flights today. Forecast still looks reasonably good for Saturday and probably better for Sunday.

Sorry if I scared you away Jon ... it's not so much a rule as a rule of thumb for H2's that show up who nobody's seen fly before. But I should have put 2 and 2 together and realized you were John Middleton's students. Having your instructor there is a whole different ball game.
But in the end I think things worked out well for you. It wasn't soarable at Hyner! Except for friday, or about half an hour as the sun went down, which nearly everyone missed. It friggin' LOOKED soarable, up until about 10 seconds after launch, when you realized there wasn't nothing there. Still a lot of fun to hang out. A couple guys came up from Ellenville and even though the flying was lame they enjoyed it so much they said they'll come back. (Don't miss the campfires when you come!)

Re: Hyner for 10/8-11
Saturday, Sunday, and probably Monday were flyable. Flew PG and HG on Saturday with a little soaring. No long flights but many, many flights during the day with a large crowd of pilots and spectators. Maybe 1/2 hour flight for a couple. Sunday's forecast was for SSW winds but was more NW most of the day and I got 2 pg and 1 hg flight with a little soaring flight and suprising how minimal the lift was most of the day. A lot less crowd of pilots so less waiting for launching. Monday's forecast was much better but we left in the morning so don't know how it turned out. Good party on Saturday night with lots of food and people. Also, did I mention the foliage was breath taking.

No worries Brian about scaring us away from Hyner
I can definitely understand about being hesitant with new H2's showing up there. We just figured we would head up there when we were both able to fly and have a little more mountain experience between us. I will definitely be up there in the Spring!!! It looks like such a cool place to fly.
The weekend here at home turned out to be lots of fun and I got my second soaring flight!!! Headed to Ridely on Monday and took 3 sled rides which were lots of fun
Hoping for another cool weekend soon!
Jon
