Friday afternoon 9/17

Post by jyoder111 »

I know the Fly-In is this weekend and the forecast is getting a little depressing for Sat and Sun, but is anyone considering Friday afternoon or evening? Pulpit maybe?

Any observers interested and willing? I'm H2, and pretty new to this weatherman business, but wunderground is saying WNW-NW 5-10mph tapering off toward evening. I can get there by 3 or 4pm.

thoughts?

Hi Jesse,

There's already some buzz about people heading to the Pulpit on Friday in the Fly-In Thread.

I think Hugh is leaning toward Friday, and if I remember right he's one of the area observers?

So you might want to give him a call.... Or, perhaps other observers who are thinking of flying
on Friday could chime in and let Jesse know their plans?

Cheers,

MarkC

PS: BTW, an L&V forecast is hardly the worst thing for a Fly-In weekend forecast! I mean
come on, we could be dealing with Hurricane Igor  Many have soared High Rock and The Pulpit
on L&V days, so don't let the nay-sayers get you down!

Hi Jesse! (not sure if my PMs are clearing the outbox)

Ya I can go Friday afternoon, but Valerie Rasmussen, the other H2, can't. My phones: 301 864-3431 (home), 301 980-6381 (cell), 202 646-5038 (work)

I'm no weather guesser either, but at this time I see zero chance we will be flying Bill's Hill (takes an east) Saturday. Looks north. Bacil would say go to Sacramento, way the hell and gone in Pennsylvania somewhere. I've never been there...

Then Sunday it goes NNW? But light.

Would be nice if there were at least one other at Pulpit on Friday, although if it's not too strong it's safe to launch from the gravel slope with minimal wirecrew.
Anybody else coming?

I am looking to fly somewhere on Friday. Not sure where yet: pulpit, Cumberland, or Highland. Won't know for sure til Friday morning.

I'll be at the Pulpit on Friday, but probably relatively late afternoon.

Pulpit Fly-In

I have some cups, plates, napkins and plastic wear. I'm also bringing wine, seltzer water, an apple pie, potato salad, some veggie burgers and buns, an onion, tomato, and a jar of brown mustard.... and a couple of trash bags.

Anyone bringing a grill????

I was able to take off work tomorrow so I'm in for Pulpit. It's looking good!
Not sure when I'll get up there but I'm guessing around 1-2PM.
Let's fly!!!

Still not sure about tomorrow. Good chance I will start at the Pulpit. Could be persuaded to go to Cumberland also... Will look at it again in the morning. How much rain falls and where will probably be a driving factor.

There's a charcoal grill and a propane grill already at the Pulpit. I'm bringing propane; someone (Carlos?) said at the meeting he'd bring charcoal.

I checked that box I was stuck with a while ago, and found that it contains enough
cups for, oh... About 400 people (literally), and lots-n-lots of spoons! So I'll be
bringing some of them, plus tablecloths and other odds and ends. Between that and
what Karen and Matthew are bringing, we should be covered for utensils and such.

PS: And I'm sooooooo happy that we got rain on Thursday, it means that there
are much fewer concerns about Sat night's sparklers. Phew!

I planning to arrive at the Pulpit after 5pm. I'm bringing a propane lantern and hot dogs and buns.

FYI, I've got a box of Fly-In related supplies that Rich B foisted ( ) on me last year,

If someone is taking on the task of coordinating a cook-out, then I'd be happy to
pass the box along....

Decent day at the Pulpit. Was honking when I got there around noon. Started to back off and I launched a little after 2 pm. Dan Tuckwiller followed about a half hour later. I got to 4K msl a couple of times but got smacked back to ridge level. Finally got to 4K in something that was still working and I just drifted with it. Topped out around 5700 MSL just North of Mercersburg. Winds were way north cross aloft. I flew cross wind towards the Michaux forrest. Got low once and then real low (7-800AGL) a few miles west of the forrest. Found a ratty thermal that got me up high enough to search around a little, eventually getting to 5800 MSL. Of course with the N cross I was drifting almost parallel to the forrest. I went on glide and made it easily but the entire area starting a couple of miles past the Michaux was in total shade. Glided and worked whatever I could. Landed around 5:30 a few miles south of the Gettysburg airport for about 38 miles. Big thanks to John Dullahan for the retrieve. Got back to the mountain house bar around 8:30 and had dinner with the crew. Good day. Hopefully more to follow this weekend. I am going to try to come out again on Sunday.
