Friday at Blue Sky

Post by dbodner »

Today was the day. In my quest to ease my way back into flying, I headed down to Blue Sky for some scooter-towing. I essentially had a beginner lesson, just get my feet wet again. I was strangely less anxious than I had been whenever I thought about flying since my accident. Steve Wendt looked at me, I think, a bit warily since he had no idea who I am. But, my first flight was a success, and Steve seemed much more comfortable afterward.

Is it wrong to say I was the star student? I kicked those first-timers' butts! Anyway, I did well, Steve's generally happy, though we both agree I could stand to lose a couple of bad habits developed over the years. So, I'll be going back before I hit the mountains.

Chuck showed up later on hoping for an afternoon flight. The sky was looking good on the way back home, so I hope he got it.

Hey Dave, it was great to meet you. I too needed to get some rust off after a long layoff and Yes, Dave it is wrong, that is, if you are referring to me. :)

For anyone who may be going to Woodstock: I would like to hang out and learn more about the site, meet other pilots, help out ect...
So be sure to post if you are planning on going and I will try to get up there. Or give me a call.
I am an H-2 from Harrisonburg, VA and would eventually like to fly the site. BTW what color are hang gliding sponsors' names if they sponsor H-2s?

Thanks,
Ann

Ann, it's great to see you on the message board. And thanks for having a sense of humor about my post.

Everyone, Ann got her foot launch sign-off in Colorado, and she's now blowing the dust off her skills at Blue Sky. Until she feels ready to foot launch here I encouraged her to come out on a Woodstock day, maybe learn to wirecrew, or drive shuttle. Actually, Ann, I think Daniel's is close to you, too. Just follow the message board conversations. You'll see when folks are flying. Also, at the top of the page, check out the FYI for H-IIs and P-2s, and learn the proper care and feeding of your Observers.

Friday turned out to be a pretty nice day! Sat around until about 3:00 waiting for things to turn on, and for the wind to decide what it was doing. Turns out, I was the only person to show in the afternoon. It was so light and variable the tow was rocky and really low. Pinned off at about 650', and sank to about 450' when I started turning in a little bump. Milked that baby ... 500', 800' ... next thing I knew I was over 1K. Managed to ride up to 4,500', sink and float between 2 and 3 K, and finally back up to 4K before it turned off, a nice hour and a half. It was so light that there was no drift. It was like being in a slow elevator almost straight up.

Great to see you back in the air David! And, I hope to see you out flying Ann! Being in Winchester, and only 20 minutes from Woodstock, I'm alway's looking for the opportunity to fly that site. Keep an eye out for Tony and Jeff too ... Two more pilots close by.
