hyner memorial day: good weather

Post by brianvh »

The weather does look good, light NW all weekend if the forecast holds. I've convinced a large contingent of Ellenville folks to drop by,

It's perfect in a west! It will actually take SW to NW. Right now sunday and monday are looking boowah, might be able to launch saturday evening and possibly earlier. You can't go too much by the forecasts: a couple years ago Shawn did 8 tandems on a day that was predicted to be light east. So long as it's light, your chances are always good.

Hope you come. The dogs will love it.

Sallie was actually wishing that we could go to Hyner this weekend - but we are committed to a party in Charlottesville Saturday evening. But it sounds like we wouldn't be missing anything Saturday. Hmmm... If I can overcome the tyranny of distance we may show up Sunday... - Hugh

Saw my surgeon today with fresh X-rays. (below)
He likes how it is looking, wants to see me again in three months, at which time we'll discuss my return to flying. Thus grounded for the summer, I'll have to miss Hyner this weekend and July 4th.

Y'all have a great time!

Wow, Cragin, those are some impressive x-rays. Hope you can make it out to Hyner for Labor Day.
As for Memorial Day, Olivia and I will be there Saturday mid-day. Can't wait!

Naw, how can anything from the neck up be that intimate?
Well, I guess I have given proof positive that I've been permanently screwed.

How long of a drive is it to Hyner? I'm in Hugh's boat, I have commitments on Saturday but might drive up on Sunday. I've never flown Hyner and there is a pretty good chance that I will be in Arizona by Labor Day.

Hmmmm. Looks like it might be West enough and not too SW for the Pulpit on Sunday.

What say you Bacil???

Hey Hugh/Sally; let me and Leigh know next time you take out the boat. We'll hookup. We're going to Swan Creek the weekend of the 5th arriving Friday and then jogging up the Chester to the Corsica River to raft up with some stink-potter's. Mat and Karen? Interested? Anybody else/

I have reneged on the party in Charlottesville (standing around drinking vs. flying - and then standing around drinking - let me think about that for about...2 seconds) and now expect to be at Hyner late morning. It's nominally 5 hours, Batman - but Sallie thinks shooting all the way up on route 15 might work better than 522 - we managed to make that last 7 hours the first time....

Rich, alas, I have the duty hooking up gliders at the sailplane club in Front Royal on the 5th. And then first (pilot's meeting) day of the East Coast Championship at Ridgely on the 6th. Come on out toward the end of the week for the first ever ECAC (East Coast Aerobatic Championship) wherein a couple of local aerobatic airplane pilots are getting trained as judges and local talent Jim Rooney and Adam Elchin will be cutting their teeth as comp aerobatic pilots. This effort to rebuild aerobatic hang-gliding in this country is being supported by a grant from CIVL (Comite Internationale de Vol Libre) the international HG/PG organization. Something a bit more visual for the public than an open-distance XC comp wherein everyone launches and then flies away, only to be seen hours later arriving back by truck with wings folded...

The throng builds! There's about a dozen people coming from the Ellenville area, then the extras from south, it's gonna be a smash dag party scene! Chris, Hyner will be everything you could wish for. Bring camp chairs!

Hugh, I've been stuck on 15 before, very narrow. Best of luck.

Chris, I don't know what time your event is over, but you can do what many of us do and drive through much of the night, avoiding traffic. If you arrive by 1 am I guarantee there will be campfires going, and beers will be shoved in your hands.

Dan Tuckwiler and Olivia, Ellis, her two guests (young women from Germany - one took a tandem with Dennis Pagen using my equipment), Sallie and I went up to Hyner this weekend. Saw Brian V-H, Shawn Macduff and the usual Hyner crew. Also Chris, Richard's H1 student, nice guy - made a big hit with the German girls. I did my first three foot-launch tandems with Brian, Ellis, and Rich Donohue. Pagen gave me some pointers, even though he was sick as a dog, poor guy. Still working some issues with the passenger hang loop: they were getting pulled up on tip-toe. We lengthened the hangstrap, finally loosening the leg loops on the knee hanger seemed to help. I took one flight with the Sport 2 first thing before starting with the tandem; Brian flew the S2 for a cloud dive this morning (I woke HIM up for it!) while I flew the tandem glider solo. There was a big crew from Ellenville. Conditions were favorable both Saturday and Sunday, and many soaring flights were had. Ellis with her PG had to push a guy with a topless who was potato-ing on launch. I know nothing about any party shenanigans: I'll be 60 this year and must have my beauty sleep. Sallie rode her bike for miles on the narrow access road on the other side of the river, then kayaked down from Renovo to the LZ. Dave and Suellen, a paragliding couple (she from Brazil),are on a year's walkabout partially sponsored by Sol - they have spiffy new Ellus. As we were departing, Ellis, Dave/Suellen and a PGer named Matthew from Philadelphia were planning to visit Jack's and Pulpit on the way back... - Hugh

Fun weekend! Olivia and I were only there for Saturday afternoon thru Sunday evening but I managed two flights and soared both times. Conditions were scratchy both flights but I got about 500' over on each. Huge crowd, lots of spectators finding their way down to the LZ to catch some of the landing action. The vast majority of the landings were nice. On the first flight my keel camera video got corrupted but I still got some nice footage besides that. Good to see everyone, we'll be back for the 4th.

So Dan, tell us about the "minority" of landings :?:

I saw a few power-whacks all due to flying too slow on final, mushing it and dropping a wing before flaring. Don't think there was any tubage though.

I wasn't going to but what the hey. I added the vanity version of my video. At 0:50, you can hear Dennis Pagen say, "Now that's a good launch." :)

BTW, that's a broad-winged hawk with his lunch at 2:25.

maybe you could add text - i could just barely make that out. i mean, if you're gonna do vanity, why be shy about it  .

also, i'm sure you could very easily have obtained and added a glowing testimonial regarding the landing

cheers
