Flying Sunday 12/20

Post by XCanytime »

After the snow event Saturday, flying in the crisp NW winds on Sunday should be quite fun and provide a backdrop for some good photos. Hiking in at Woodstock or flying at Smithsburg are being considered. I'm leaning towards the latter since I haven't flown with Eddie Miller in a long time. Anybody remember January 20th, 1996 flying at High Rock in 44 inches of snow??? I believe I remember Tom McGowan soaring, George Price extendoing, Mark Fink and Brian Hardwick sledding and it taking an hour and a half to get out of the 44" of snow in the LZ.

Ok, I'm about to concede on the possibility of flying tomorrow. :o

However!

If Sunday turns out to be a sledding-at-Smithsburg type of day....

Then I'm going to bring my glider! You never know, perhaps the winds
won't be as strong as are currently being forecast. Wouldn't it be
cool if there was a window of flyable conditions?

PS: Yeah, thought about Woodstock, but hiking up the back in
deep snow would be quite a challenge..... Maybe even enough
to give Joe S. pause! :)

I'm bailing on tomorrow. 5 hours of shoveling snow today and I'm plum tuckered out. Have fun at the 'burg or the rock.

Hmmmm...

SUNDAY
MOSTLY CLOUDY IN THE MORNING...THEN BECOMING PARTLY SUNNY.
HIGHS IN THE LOWER 30S. NORTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP
TO 30 MPH.

Haven't written off the idea by any means, but will be looking at conditions
very closely tomorrow AM.

This morning's surface 'cast gets rid of the 30mph gust factor. But the ADDS 3k
looks very strong, with no late-day back-off. Clearly it's a Woodstock day....

But you never know, forecasts are only forecasts, I could be tempted into heading
up to the Rock to take a look. Anyone giving this some thought other than Daniel
and myself?

I'd do the Woodstock hike up if we could find out (maybe form Hank) if the back side road was plowed to the gate. My arms are pumped from shoveling my 40' driveway 5 times and my neighbors 10' driveway. Plus I turned 56 today. So lets go Mark.

Tom M. come on I don't want any whimpering!

Happy b'day you old fart! Weather sucks here--cloudbase is barely over the ridge but may go anyway since NW days are so rare here these days.

Hey Marc,
Same to ya... I know if you and Mitch were up here we'd be on the way. Well for sure we'd be looking at somewhere the Rock if winds were okay.

Oh,oh... I might be chickening out

Urf, I can't even IMAGINE doing the hike up the back at the 'Stocker
in all this snow! I'm afraid it's High Rock or bust for me....

I'll keep it on the mid-burner until I've seen some updated forecasts (10-ish).
Would definitely need a full crew.

Uh-oh... The 30mph gust is back, in the 9:20 update of the surface cast.
I'm guess I'm going to wimp out :(

18 inches of snow at Woodstock. Not sure if the road has been plowed to the gate yet. I'm thinking not because Boliver Rd. is not plowed yet. Plowed my driveway with the tractor. First pass was yesterday at noon. By the time I made a full pass down the driveway (3/4 mile) and back there was another 2 1/2 inches where I started :-}
