Wow, the Pulpit looks awesome today. The sounding is calling for WNW wind with cb at 6000'. Wish I could go but I have entered the ranks of the semi-retired for a few months and will be flying to Charlotte, NC today. Bummer as I am closing in on my flying goals for the year. Hope there is still some good weather left when I get back.

Do not know if anyone flew at the pulpit but we had a fair number at Woodstock including Pete S, Tom M, David C, Randy, Tony D, Chuck O, yours truly, one other hg, and Jim and another PG pilot. Everyone got to fly and soar with a West cross at launch and big time Woodstock effect. At times it was calm at launch with mostly 2 - 7 and rarely above that. Quite a ricochet of wind at launch at times. Flights didn't get going until 3:00 with Pete doing a good fight for about 30 min. The Tom launched with his harness boot hitting a rock but got out OK and getting up for the longest flight of the day 3+ hours and maybe the highest of 2 - 3k above. After 4:00 getting up was easier but no one was getting more than a 2k above. Chuck got to do his second mountain flight and got 1:15 which is his longest flight to date. Congratulations. I launched at 4:55 and got a nice 1:30 flight. Randy may have done XC but no details. The PG's launched a bit after me and later Pete did a second flight.

There is carpet on the pad at the Pulpit, delivered by yours truly this morning at 9:30A. Already soarable and strong. Got in the air during a throttleback at 11A with the help of two birders Bob and Alex. Got 1:45 and 800' over in a sky that showed no good lift from north of launch to south of launch. Down by The Corner a nice line of cumies developed, but it was SW on the ridge and the ridge curves to the NW down to The Corner. Did not want to land out down there. Had a nice landing in the main LZ and climbed the mountain up the gas line clear cut, then linked up with the Tuscarora Trail to launch. Took 1:15 for the trip. Before I headed up Krzyztof launched with the help of some hikers and got up. I ran into the hikers on the trail as I headed to launch. They were going to be picked up at Rt. 16. He got 1400' over and went OTB to LeMasters. Stopped by Smithsburg on the way back and saw 4 gliders in the air at HIgh Rock at 4:45P.

Woodstock 10/4
Decided to go to Woodstock, could get in touch with anyone else. Meet with Luis and Tony in the LZ, and then David C showed up. At launch Pete and Tom were ready, but the wind was light. After the drive decided to take the sled and go back to HR. Always ready to break down if I didn’t like the conditions. Pete launched and after some effort landed. Tom launched later and disappeared, but he wasn’t in the LZ. Got to launched and waited for something decent. Barely making any progress, eventually got higher. Once over the ridge it got really decent, but no-one else was launching. The highlight that made my day, I finally got to thermal with one eagle and another that join later, first after 15 years. My plan was to land at before 4:30 breakdown and head to HR. At that time I went to the LZ but I was higher. Lift all-over, I had to look for sink, and it wasn’t easy. Eventually made it to HR where a few hard-core ones were ready to pack. I helped eating everything that was left on the table.

After hanging around launch I decided to make a run to the point (Strausburg). On my way back I landed in the field north of the first finger north of launch. Got a ride back to launch from Hubble, a hang glider pilot who trained with Steve Wendt but is not presently flying. He owns the field. A very "landable" field if you put it down in the first two thirds, before the single wire electric fence (which runs along the dirt road) and avoid the swamp. Thankfully I avoided both.
