Family Flying

Post by KirkLewis »

This last weekend my father, mother, and brother came to visit me. We did the usual 4th stuff in D.C. but the highlight of their trip was them coming to hang glide! I tried my best to fly with them but was getting pretty discouraged. My mother went up first, and I got lift under a cloud, but it was windy and I was getting blown downwind. Still... I could of stuck with the cloud longer but instead decided to head over to them as they were towing up. Never leave lift! ARG. I hit major sink and by the time they released I was 1000ft below them. After we landed things got so windy that we had to stop towing. Bummer :( But my mom loved it and said she found it very relaxing. She said Sunny did a great job and really helped make her feel comfortable with the whole thing. Sunny was my instructor and I'd agree, he's great at explaining how things work and you can tell he's done this a million times and knows exactly what he's doing.

We went back Monday for a second try for my dad and brother. It was less windy and the day looked perfect. I towed up and zack released me in a thermal... which promptly evaporated and left me searching for the remaining 2600ft in vein :( WTF it was 2 oclock how can there not be any thermals! Oh well my Dad enjoyed his flight too but I was bummed as it seemed like I wasn't going to get to fly with any of them. Sunny and Zack were great... there was no one else there and yet they waited for 1hr before we gave it another try with my brother. This time was an awesome success. I hooked a thermal upwind and got to 4300ft when my brother and sunny released at 2500 in the thermal below me. I dove out of the thermal and raced down to them. To me it seemed like an exciting maneuver but on the video playback (I had a helmet cam) it looked pretty lame lol. I guess gforce doesn't come through in a camera. Next time I'll do wingovers at least that looks cool. So anyway I got down to their level and we thermaled on opposite sides of the thermal, at the same height, all the way up to 4000ft again. Then we left to get back to the field. As we glided back I flew around them and them around me, sometimes above, below, side by side. When we got to the field we did a pass by and then landed, me coming in shortly after them and right beside them. I wish I had found a way to high five him in mid-flight, but other than that it really couldn't have been much better :P

Thanks to the highland crew, my family now thinks I'm a little bit saner
