Woodstock 7/3

Post by XCanytime »

Heading to WV for a week's vacation on Friday. Driving right by Woodstock, and taking the glider. Might be worth stopping for a midday flight. Any others interested if it turns out to be flyable?

I might be able to come out and play on Friday. Right now the forecast looks pretty good. Hopefully it holds. I enjoyed a real nice flight at the Rock on Sat. with a couple of visits to cloud base and a nice long flight. Couldn't ask for a better flight on one's birthday, except my landing was a bit rough :o !

Luis Chang, the newly arrived Peruvian pilot, is interested in flying this weekend. I don't think he is on the forum yet. I e-mailed him of your interest in Woodstock tomorrow (lchangb@gmail.com). His cell is 202 580-2390. I have family/guests in town, but might get a day to fly this weekend... - Hugh

Gary Smith and I are in for Woodstock tomorrow. Forecast is sweet for a PM flight. I'm thinking of getting there by 12 noon. Got a driver to boot. Hope to head SW and cut off some distance in the car  .

Anyone want to meet in the LZ to drop a vehicle?

Six pilots committed aviation yesterday at WS: Mike L, Dave P, Tom M, Kelvin P, Tony D, and me.

Gary, Bruce and Bacil stopped by but didn’t set-up after hearing stories of earlier sled rides and seeing lighter than expected winds and an overly developed sky.

I’m happy that long time no see-ums Mike and Kelvin have made it back to the mountains, but sorry they didn’t get treated to better conditions.

Mike and Dave went first sled’ed/extendo’ed; Dave hampered by a malfunctioning vario. Tom got up and stayed up for an hour (?) or so, mostly fairly low. Conditions were lighter for Kelvin and Tony and they had short flights. With everyone in the LZ and light winds, I self-launched at around 4:30 expecting to sled, but cruised up to the first finger maintaining and then got established possibly rotor surfing on the north cross. I eventually got high enough to head to some sunny ground a few fingers north where I hooked a strong thermal which took me to 2500 over, when I bailed because I was drifting too far over the back without a driver (winds at alt were more brisk). Should have just gone for it. Ended up with 90 minutes, always nice to come down by choice. Beautiful evening…sunlight turning the river gold, one bald eagle and bunches of hawks.

I’m going to have to hang up my wings for a while to get through some grad school challenges. I’ll see everyone again in January.

Blue skies,
Daniel
