Good Route to Hyner View

Post by CraginS »

I'm heading to Hyner View for the weekend, for my second ever visit. Last year on Labor Day, Dennis and Rich tipped me off to a good route, which I used heading home. Here it is for others who were not aware.

Go toward the Pulpit, and then up US 522 heading to Jack's Mountain. Continue on to the south side of Lewistown; take the US 22 bypass to hop onto US 322 north. At Potters Mills, abandon US 322 and continue north on PA 144. At Pleasant Gap head north on US 220, then merging into I-80, but leaving I-80 again to stick with US 220 into Lockhaven. Take PA 120 north out of Lockhaven to Hyner.

Get Google Maps to show the route to you be asking for directions from Lewistown PA to Hyner View State Park or to Renovo PA.

Thanks Cragin.
When I went up there for Memorial Day this year, I have no idea how I got there.
I thought I knew the way by heart, but I didn't.
No PA map in the car, and I didn't want to turn around to get back on track. Stopping for directions was out of the question.
I'm a man dammit! And I had 2 girls with me!
Still, somehow I made it, with only an extra 15 or 20 minutes added. :)
See you there!

That's the route I used to take, Cragin. It has the benefit of taking you past 2 (3 if you count pleasant gap) launches before you even get there. Even if you don't fly at any of them it provides the right ambience to get you in the mood.

Looks west the whole weekend, perfect. 30% chance of thunderstorms is pretty standard for the summer. I smell cloud dives.

I just noticed: don't take the route 22 bypass. Take Jack's mountain road right past launch, then go on towards bellville. Continue through bellville to 322. The bypass gets clogged. Also, after bellville you'll pass a nice little winery. I'm quite fond of their bottled sangria.
