Spent the weekend on Skyline drive and found this in the park service's Summer '09 visitor's guide:
"Big Meadows had been designated a "National Soaring Site" for gliders."
This was in 1934. Could there be a moldy old rule on the books that we could take advantage of? A quick internet search found nothing.

"Not really. The guide (as reported) is slightly in error - the site is a "National Soaring Landmark" (not "site") which was established in 1993 to commemorate the record flight of Richard DuPont made in 1933. (He flew a Bowlus Albatross from that site to Frederick, MD.) It's not really, nor can it be, a real "soaring site" for gliders.
