Woodstock Saturday

West X with freight trains on launch. Broken lift aloft. Got a lot better and easier above 1500 over. Some PGs flew (early and late) but it looked pretty marginal for them. Bruce E flew to Berryville.

Pulpit Saturday

Post by Matthew »

Steve,

You shoulda been at the Pulpit ya traitor--

Bunner went 71 miles to York. Cavanaugh and Proctor went east of Chambersburg. Me, Carlos, Hugh and Bacil made it to Greencastle and Daniel B. went to Waynsboro. Eveyone flew and everyone soared-- at least 20 HG pilots-- most of us launched from the awesome new launch pad. Geat party, bonfire and fireworks afterwards. Looks like great flying to be had at Pulpit again today (Sunday).

As for calling Steve a traitor (whether in jest or not is irrelevant).
Steve (and he'll probably kill me when he reads this) has advanced $500+ almost a year ago for a headstone for the Carboughs. He still has not been reimbursed by CHGPA and its treasurer.
Steve was the only guy (except for Brian) willing to observe Glen and me. Some observers didn't even grant us the courtesy of returning our calls in our desperate struggle for H3.
Steve had to listen to a lot of sh*t after his unfortunate accident, yet he rose from the ashes like Phoenix. He kicks everybody's butt in the air with ease. I have nothing but respect for this guy.

As far as I'm concerned he couldn't betray the club any more than the club betrayed him.

Easy. I got paid. Check arrived yesterday along with a note from Craigin apologizing for the delay. The apology wasn't necessary. I always assumed I would get paid at some point -- I never thought I was dealing with deadbeats, just glider pilots with lives and other priorities who needed an occasional reminder. This was never an issue for me.

I had intended to go to the fly-in but diverted to WS because I thought the Pulpit would be blown out. I was wrong. Again. Imagine that. By posting a WS flight I didn't intend to dis the fly-in. Not a zero sum game.

I used to oppose the Pulpit fly-in on principle on the grounds that it stressed our sites -- lz landowners at the pulpit, fisher and Bills. I still think it is a bad idea but the numbers are way down from our peak and if you go xc (which I certainly intended to do,) you are not stressing anything.

It was rockin' on Sat at the Pulpit. I crossed the valley, bumping up against the
Micheaux (sp?) forest right at Route 30. Maybe my fourth crossing of the valley,
and this time under blue skies, so I was pretty happy.

Launched from the new slot/pad, at the end of the first wave. It was
strong, gusting to 30. Took a cycle that was probably 20+, and it was a
molasses type of launch, but under control and ok (checked with wire crew
afterwards, for feedback). I'm really looking forward to a 15-20 launch, to
see what that's like.

On the ridge, it was nasty, gnarly, and mean. It took me at least an hour
to hook a thermal that would get me to more than 2k above launch. When
I finally did, things really improved as I drifted over the back. Topped out
at about 6700' MSL, with no clouds downwind and things drying up upwind.
Great. Now what? :)

Unfortunately I didn't really have much choice : When I finally got high, I figured
it was going to be my one and only shot, and I really wanted off the ridge.
Trying to be lined up with downwind clouds would have been nice, but there
was simply no way.

There's a concentration of industrial sites with LOTS of hot roofs, paved
parking lots, etc, just before I-81 on the south side of Chambersburg. Caught
a thermal there, low, which allowed me to continue. Watch for it on your next
OTB flight. Better yet, check it out on Google so that you know what it looks
like:

I'm amazed that with that amount of wind they'd heat up. Or was chambersburg in wind shadow?

The winds over the back weren't as hefty as on the launch however they were still strong. The good lift was most likely created by the dry air mass we were flying in. I've flown over these buildings on previous flights and gotten nothing so don't expect some type of house thermal there. Better bet to fly down wind and turn in anything that is going up as the lift gets really soft in the valley. Expect half the lift that you were getting on the mountain. The lift will improve again once over the Michaux as there is a significant elevation change (not quite mountains) that boosts the thermals up. Then expect softer conditions again as you take the eastern line into the flats north of Gettysburg.
