Torn between going to the Hyner gathering, and BlueSky for some Truck towing, I opted for the later. I paid for the Aerotow lessons quite some time ago... so finally the stars lined up... winds calmed down, Peter Kane and tug pilot (Kevin) were available. The lessons consisted of 2 tandem flights and then a solo flight on a Falcon 195.
The first tandem flight I was overwhelmed with information on the different techniques used in aero towing, as opposed to truck towing. The one constant was you have to follow a moving object. The hard part for me was constantly watching the tug at the end of a 220ft rope (seemed like tunnel vision), keeping it on the horizon and within a certain box. That and trying to control the glider with me and Peter strapped in.
The Second tandem, I did the launch and control of the glider with Peters verbal input. Kevin did a bunch of turns, trying to shake us. A couple times I felt the sphincter restrict trying to stay where I was supposed to be... but other than that... didn't have to early release. When it came time to land, Peter took over so we would get on the ground quicker, which was cool in itself. Did some altitude loss maneuvers that I've never tried.
Steve pulled out the Falcon 195, and we went through the procedures again. I was a little apprehensive on doing the solo... OK, a lot. Steve and Peters re-assurance calmed that somewhat... just another flight. The sphincter factor was very active, though. On takeoff, I stayed on the cart about twice as long as I should have. The climb was really nice in the smooth evening air, and Kevin was nice to me the rest of the flight. I was relieved to get waved off, and released into the calm evening air. I just boated around for a while, enjoying the relief of being off of that rope, but at the same time enjoying the new dimension to hang gliding. I still have several/many solos to do before getting the sign off, but this is one step closer.
Thanks Steve, PeterK and Kevin... It was a blast.

Nice job, Tony. Congrats!
Hopefully I'll find some time this summer to get AT trained also.
Way to go!
