Fla. cops train for paraglider patrol team
Buzz up!
Palm Bay, Fla., police will soon be taking the high road -- specifically, motorized paragliders -- to combat crime, Florida Today reports.
Four officers are training for the department's new pilot paragliding program called "Operation Soar." They hope to use the team for close-ground air searches for missing children or seniors, especially in wooded areas, or to patrol areas hard-hit by burglary and other minor crimes.
"We're always pushing the envelope. I just see a lot of law enforcement applications with this," Palm Bay Police Chief William Berger tells the newspaper.
The motorized paragliders will not fly above 400 feet and can operate for about 45 minutes at a time.
The department's earlier attempt to use unmanned drones for patrols was shot down by the Federal Aviation Administration, Florida Today says.
