Whoa, count me in! The flight to Cedar Bonnet, NJ should only take a little over 3 hours.

Definitely survivable. I'd be more scared walking under power lines than flying over them on a day like this.

Yes. Funny. EXHAGGERATION!!!!
When do people need smiley faces for something that is clearly absurd?
Unless you didn't find it to be absurd. In which case, WHOA! You really ought to scale back what you consider as good flying conditions at the Pulpit?

Matthew,
I know you didn't mean anything by it, but the uninformed observer might interpret that Janni and Bacil are pilots pushing the edge of the envelope of acceptable winds to launch in. If you had put in the
there should be no misinterpretation. Or just said "Let's all go". Case in point: I remember back over 10 years ago an illustration in a western club newsletter that pretty well implied that a certain instructor was too lenient in his boundaries of safe conditions for his charges. Some may have found it funny, but it certainly seemed to be an outright dig at the instructor.

I'm with Bacil on this one....
As you are typing away at the keyboard from home, try to remember that you are
NOT actually hanging out with your flying buddy(ies), drinking a brew after a great
flying day.
So what plays in your head as "Good-natured ribbing that anyone would figure out"
might not (and often times WILL NOT) be interpreted anywhere CLOSE to what you
had in mind.
Sure, you can say "Lighten up, we're all adults, and we all know that we support each other
as brothers and sisters of the air". But guess what? The world often doesn't work that way.
Sarcasm/joking/teasing might NOT convey (not, not!, NOT!) in the way that you think
it does! I can't even begin to count the number of places where I've seen this happen.
And the smaller the online community, the bigger the problem.
A second reason to be considerate/thoughtful is because there are many forum lurkers
who have absolutely no idea about who we are and what we are like (in person). We've
got about 300 registered users, but the actual number of visitors is at least twice that
number. And SOME of those lurkers are potential new, active pilots in our area!
Truly, I don't mean to lay down some politically-correct hammer. But I am asking everyone
to realize the LIMITATIONS OF THE MEDIUM that are a consequence of text forums like
ours. We've got enough genuine disagreement without adding to the problem with posts
that can easily come across as snide.
So let's just try to keep the level of courtesy and consideration a bit higher than we have
in the past, shall we?
(and let's pray for some frickin' airtime that will end the cabin fever!)

Oh, for crying out loud! We don't need to put smiley faces everytime someone is joking around. I know hang glider pilots and they are sharp and intelligent people. Your contention that unknown readers of the forum are so dim that they can't get a joke is an insult to everyone on the forum. And I think you guys need to apologize for implying that the readers of the forum are a bunch of idiots.

Matthew
For one, none of us said that readers of the forum are so dim that they can't get a joke. I agree what you said was absurd. Nobody in their right mind would go out to fly in such winds, and the readers of the forum know that. They know that it was a joke. What they might not know is who the heck is Janni and Bacil, and why are they being mentioned? Could it be that they like to fly in strong winds? I mean, I know that the post is absurd, but why would these two specific guys be mentioned? Is it because they like the Pulpit? Ever think about that? Has nothing to do with intelligence and sharpness. It's just simply interpretation.
Even the moderator of the forum, who knows what the hell he is talking about when it comes to these things, sees the two sides of the coin. Nobody disagrees that what you said was absurd.
None of us needs to apologize because in no way, shape, or form did we imply that the readers of the forum are a bunch of idiots. You are putting out words that were never spoken or implied. Who made you the Pope of the forum

Re: Pulpit Thursday 2/12
yeah man, i even thought bacil's first response to your 'funny' was itself funny(!). i actually thought he was going to come on again and say something like "Psych!", 'just messin' with you dude" (though maybe he did. sorta. if you really look for it). but hey, his name was mentioned so he gets to have his take on it - was my second take.
and there may be the point to be made that if a lurker iS too dim to get a joke then who wants them anyhow(!) but that's probably one of those 'on dangerous ground' kind of things so i guess i wouldn't say it.
and a lot of you guys aRe dim - at least the ones who don't get My jokes!

Quoting myself:
But my experience goes back to 1989. So when I say "the world often doesn't work
that way", I'm referring to how the LIMITATIONS OF THE MEDIUM can conspire to
make one's post be misinterpreted, even though you might think that the spirit of
your post is "obvious" to all who are reading the forum.
Trust me, it just isn't that simple. 20+ years of watching flame wars tells me so.
(And I really have higher hopes for the CHGPA forums than what I have seen elsewhere.)
Does this mean that one has to be completely "PC" in each and every post that one
makes in forums like these?
Well... Hell no! It is legitimate to say things like "Lighten up people, it's just a joke!".
I'm COOL with that, and that's probably the case for many/most of our other
forum readers.
But Bacil's point is still dead-on : What, exactly, is it about he and Janni that makes
the two of them the focus of your post? Their motivation to fly at the only club-owned
site that we have, and make the most of the opportunities to fly there? Their desire to get
some XC miles, even if the conditions might be more perfect at some other site?
If that's all it is.... Then sure, a little good-natured ribbing about flying in 60mph winds
could be funny/amusing, given some knowledge about the pilots in question.
But ASSUMING that knowledge?
Referring to the JUST the two of them, without any sort of qualification/explanation/smiley/etc?
Nope, sorry, that is NOT cool. In the immortal words of Steve K, it is "snarky" .

Re: Pulpit Thursday 2/12
AGAIN. For crying out loud! Gee, why oh why am I busting on my friends Janni and Bacil about flying in strong conditions? Hmmm. That's a real head scratcher. SCRATCH! SCRATCH! SCRATCH! Maybe one of them had just made a frivolous post about flying in strong winds and calling everyone a bunch of wimps. And maybe the other one is always making plans to be in the air before the winds GET TOO STRONG TO LAUNCH, bought a small glider to be able to fly in strong conditions... and half of his flight reports are "it was the most turbulent flight of my life!!!!"
Or maybe I just randomly chose my good friends Janni and Bacil and got lucky?
As to 'snarky', hmmm. Back when Marc Fink lived up here, everyone was always giving him a hard time on the forum and the old list server. Never heard any complaints from him or anyone else about so-called 'snarkiness'. You can bust my chops and I'll have a good laugh. And Steve K., despite his recent California dreaming, he's been known to be 'snarky' a few times. As to the Forum etiquette, it says--
"Don't post something insulting or snide that you would never say to a person face-to-face".
I have not violated this rule. And because everyone is being so cordial, there is also no flame war. Hence, there doesn't appear to be a rule against 'snarkiness'. Busting chops, good natured ribbing and sarcasm is allowed on this forum. If you wish to change the Forum rules so that all posts must be peace and love and flowers and rainbows, so be it. Otherwise, embrace a little 'snarkiness' every so often.
Life is supposed to be fun!

Re: Pulpit Thursday 2/12
i ran into bacil a couple of years ago at the pulpit and held his nose wires and such while he was setting up. i think it was the first time i'd met him and proceeded to make some small talk. i said something like"oh, i recognize the name, you like to or you're comfortable taking on the kick-ass stuff". or something like that. he responded, rather emphatically i thought, that he wasn't a reckless pilot - he knew what he was doing. or something like that. it was a couple of years ago. so i very quickly tried to make the point that, hell yeah, it's about what one enjoys, the challenges one likes and what one is comfortable with. or something like that. it was a couple of years ago.
so, indeed, i actually was one of those people who, upon meeting him, made a statement that he legitimately heard as, and was worried was, a negative stereotype going around about him. i didn't mean it negatively but i thought his concern was legitimate and took pains to explain such.
so even though i thought matthew's 'snipe' was innocent in it's seeming familiarity with bacil and could even be interpreted as showing a respect for his talents and competency, i also was privy to his experience of me walking up to him as the embodiment of what his concern was/is. you know - me once again sticking my foot in my mouth.
as i see it, we've all just got done bitching and complaining about incivility in one long running situation, with some 'calling mark out' to do his fricking job g**d**it!
so that's what he's attempting to do. and if he's going to do it effectively then he has to Do it, which means him not coming on and just whining and wussing himself.
as in "...Character is to act on two good contradictory ideas. ~James Champy.
and matthew just happened to sort of misjudge his timing as regards both matters. he ran into a 'perfect storm' in a sense, and probably justifiably felt something like, "damn! how is it that this 'ton of bricks just fell on Me." "hell man, i'm from new york and we damn well know how to respond to a direct frontal attack".
but hey, a smiley face now and again ain't all that much to ask.
and his point that there is a context within which his comment should be viewed has a legitimacy also. at least i can see the point. i know darn well that, with all the stuff that I put out there that i'm hoping like hell that any one thing is viewed in some kind of overall context. actually i'm counting on it, unrealistically as that may possibly be.
there's probably a hole in the overall fabric of what all i just wrote, but once again, i too am hoping that it will be seen in some kind of context of my total 'body of work'. even if it's just, "Oh no, there he goes again with his obtuse blathering!"

Re: Pulpit Thursday 2/12
gotta agree with Matthew that the ol' "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" can destroy a perfectly good punch line. but the smily face can also make it clear whether or not something's a joke a a sly slur.
Rather than pseudo flaming back and forth, the best way to defuse the situation might be for someone to jump right in with an obvious continuation of the joke, with smily faces if necessary.
"hell yeah, I've attached my hang strap to a brick and I'm ready to go!
