Tell your friend to take heart--we just opened a new site north of Birmingham which I believe will become a MAJOR xc site in the eastern US. 10K cbase days are not that uncommon around here on good spring/early summer days--a tandem at Lookout got that high last year (thermalling) and a solo went to 11K.
