New Flight Park

Post by dbodner »

Campbell Field airport on VA's Eastern Shore is starting up a HG flight park. I guess they'll pull their business from Hampton Roads.

Ya I remember hearing about this and meeting the guy running it at highland this last season. Hopefully it will bring more people into the sport, it looks like a great location.

I was surprised to hear that the guy starting it up was just now taking lessons to learn to hang glide. That's pretty ballsy. I can't imagine learning how to hang glide and starting a hang gliding business up. I'd turn into one gigantic ulcer.

I'll fill in some details for ya'll.

Bill (one of the pilots for the skydivers) came for a tandem a while back. He took to it all like a fish to water. It was tricky getting him in between his schedule and ours, but we got him up a few times. Let's just say he got hooked, in a big way. Bill's local field, Campbell Field, is owned by... well Glen Campbell... who just happens to also be a new addict in the world of hang gliding. So Bill went down to FL, bought a dragonfly and had them teach him how to tow with it.
Last I talked to him, he was having Rich Cizauskus (spelled wrong naturally) come up and teach. I think he was trying to get Johnny Thompson up as well. I get down and help when I can.

Before he started in on his plan, he even asked Sunny and Adam if they thought it would encroach on their business.
Of course it won't, but we were all impressed by that.

Bill's a great guy. It's good to have him promoting the sport.

I met Gordon a couple weeks back when he flew down to Quest with Johnnie Thompson. Super nice guy with a great attitude. I don't think he expects to make a bunch of money, just have some fun and hopefully pay some expenses. Hope it works out for him.

Hello all, I'm Gordon Campbell, and along with Bill McCarter we are the guys that are starting the aerotow ops on the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia (ESVA). While Jim Rooney might think I'm the musician “Glen Campbell” (lol!), I'm really just another aviation buff looking to have some fun. Trust me, you don't want me singing!

I am only an H-2 but will be working quickly towards my instructor rating (it helps to have a tug in the hangar next to your office), and Bill is well on his way towards being a proficient tug pilot. He is also a commercially rated pilot.

Our goal is to be safe, have a lot of fun and introduce hang gliding to the ESVA and Hampton Roads area. Covering our expenses is further down the list but making money is not on the agenda yet. We are just going to take it slow and see what develops.

We are looking for HG Instructors. As I posted on the Oz Report we will provide a housing stipend and will guarantee a base pay. Instructors who can only commit to a day or two at a time are also welcome. If you like the rural lifestyle, enjoy boating and fishing this is the place for you. I can be contacted at 757-442-7519 or flytova@gmail.com.

Campbell Field Airport is a public use, privately owned (I am the only owner) airport on 150 acres of land. Tent & RV camping is available, a 24 hour bathroom and shower is being built, and cabins might be in the works in the near future. I am working on the HG website and will have it up shortly. You can learn more about the airport at http://www.CampbellFieldAirport.com

We hope that many of you will make a trip down here when the weather warms up and for the first person that can make it from Highlands to here we will think of some way to enshrine your accomplishment for eternity....good luck!

Woohoo! Another flight park within a day's drive. We are truly blessed. Can't wait to check it out. Gordon - are you open yet or do we have to wait until spring?
