awesome HG photo in Washington Post

Post by pink_albatross »

There's an awesome HG photo in the Washignton Post TODAY.
Not sure how to link to it. Go to Day in Photos. It's the 7th photo.

Look at #7 in the link. Very cool photo, thanks Ellis.

Anyone see a problem here? Notice the VG line dangling from the pilot's lower right corner bracket in what is likely a full-tight configuration? How confident is the pilot (or even cognizant of the possibility) that that line won't wrap around some feature on the ground creating problems for all involved?

During the ’08 ECC, two of the top rated pilots treated us to an aerial display ending in a choreographed, low level, high-speed pass over the staged line of gliders. It was quite impressive but there was chatter about the wisdom of one of the gliders fully tight VG line raking it across the top surfaces of the staged gliders (it wan't intentional.) If that line had snagged around say the landing wires of a king posted glider it would have been quite ugly (the staged gliders were topless.) With the bar stuffed like that it wouldn’t take much force to upset the glider and it would happed so fast that it would be impossible for the pilot to react.

Something to think about…
