Christmas at Woodstock?

Post by Pete Schumann »

Anyone up for Woodstock Christmas Day if conditions are good? The road may or may not be open yet, so it might be a hike up too.

Forecast winds looks good, which means it will probably be light. I'm interested... if the crew includes an observer.

David- Sorry, I'm not an observer. Maybe one will post.

Tony- Not sure on the road. In these conditions it is best to come in from the back side.
That way if the gate is closed, you can hike up.
It doesn't sound like your up for the hike if the road is closed. Maybe Hank will post on the road.

I would not be able to get there until 12:30ish if folks are wanting and able to go.

12:30 would work for me but nobody responded. I guess everyone is too busy to check the forum? Maybe next year when I'm a h3.

FYI I have every day off between now and Jan 4th, so if there are good conditions I'm interested.

I'm lumbered with visiting family but may drag them along or just sneak out of the house while they sleep in. And I'm an observer - sorry, I'm thinking about the weekend or next week. I have one use-or-lose day off to burn before the New Year... - Hugh

Well.. I'm gonna head out and at least see if the road is open. Should get there around 1230ish. Gonna check to see if the road is open on the Woodstock side, first. If it is, I'll head to the LZ and hopefully meet someone there. If it's not... oh well I can at least do a retrieve, give me a call. Not familiar with getting in from the back side...

Tony,

If you want to go the back way, look for Fort Valley Road south off 55 east of Strasburg. Go 8-10 miles until you get to downtown Fort Valley and turn right uphill on Woodstock Fire Tower Road. Press on to the summit and a little beyond and you'll find the familiar parking area. If the gate is closed on the back side, it's a shorter hike up the back than the front way.

Wow! Very nice Christmas soaring flights at Woodstock... The road was open, temps near 50 with sunshine and straight in mellow conditions.
Tony, Adam and I had nice flights, we all landed in the bridge field and managed rides to the top.
