OT: Google StreetView for DC

Post by CraginS »

Sometime in the last few months, maps.google.com has activated StreetView for the entire DC area.
Very interesting.
They got my street last fall, in late Sept or early Oct - lots of green grass and green trees, but also a lot of fallen leaves already on the yard. Only car in the drive my old Celica.

Middleton's street appears to be on a weekend morning, between 9 and 10:30. Red Jeep in the drive, two or more gliders loaded on it.

Matt and Karen they hit on a Tuesday afternoon. Racked but gliderless truck in the drive, empty trash can still on the curb, not yet brought back to the house.

Oh, they also have RIchmond area. You can drive up Dabney Mill Road off of 360 and see the sign at the entrance to Blue Sky.

What can you tell about your place?

My brother needed to put me as beneficiary on some insurance papers. Didn't have my address though he had walked there, and I was out somewhere and couldn't be reached by cell. He used Googlemaps to see my address. A bit blurry and he got it wrong but it was a cool idea anyway.

I saw a guy come riding through campus on a tricycle setup with a box on the back and cameras in all four directions sticking up like a periscope. He just tooled around every nook and cranny he could find and disappeared on down the road. the box was labelled 'google maps'.

Glider on the car. Fall. 7th and A NE. Pretty cool but I don't get it. Seems like a lot of work and expense. What does google get out of this? Never mind. The number of things I don't get seems to be growing exponentially.

The google maps "neighborhood" guys were in Dunlap Tennessee during the TTT team challenge last fall. They photographed us sitting in front of the TTT painted rock. I haven't seen it yet but it should be there by now.

Google maps is producing advertising space. Pretty new so not many advertisers yet, but ads that rotate with the view would be worth paying for if you are on a frequently visited street. Blanket ads if you are on a neighborhood street.

They did our street within the last few months. Maybe Late July or Early September. Looks like late afternoon. I think I remember seeing the Google car go by. I would think it was my imagination except on zoom in you can see me standing in the driveway presumably playing with my daughter.
