Flying the landfill

Post by jimrooney »

So it was recently brought to attention that when they "cap" a landfill, they seek recreational use for it. I think he said they were under a mandate to do so.
This was very through the grapevine stuff, so I'm wondering if anyone else had heard of this.
There's a guy up in NJ working on getting them to let him fly one... they can be rather ideal for training hills and quite soarable in the right wind.

Pipe dream? Or is there something to it?

I've flown "Mt Trashmore" off of 66--Christy was working on getting access to one in MD but I think it bogged down.. Problem often is clearance at the base of the hills. Some have toxic elements like the one near Upton. I've flown one in Maine as well. RC'ers like them.

John Middleton and I met with a staff person at Montgomery County at the old (capped) landfill in Laytonsville. He wasn't too promising. The site couldn't be opened until there was no hazard from the gases (methane) which are being piped off for use. Also, they were busy planting a whole bunch of trees around it so the neighbors wouldn't have to see it. Once those grow, it will be turbulent. John's assessment was that the best spot was on the edge and the neighbors along there are so pissed off at the county for the landfill (they claim it ruined their well water) that they won't do anything for anybody other than themselves. So, the only hope is if you can convince some of them to want to learn to hang glide. They're not young....

I think the training hill in Santa Barbara is a landfill. Great site. Lots of great PR and community support.
