Highland Fly-In June 28-29

Post by Matthew »

Well. We belw it by not being at Highland this weekend. We had a sailing commitment on Saturday and we believed the stupid F-ing forecast on Sunday.

So don't blow it next weekend. Get your butts out to Ridgely for the 9th Annual Fly-In at Highland Aerosports!!!!!

The Highland Fly-in is ALWAYS great....even if you can't fly. Wish we could go but 1,000 miles might be a bit far.

Have fun,

Paul

I talked with Adam about the Fly-In, and it seems that there are some significant
plans afoot to light up the night  That reason alone will make this year's
fly-in a blast, I'm sure!

He hasn't heard from many people about whether they are coming... I think we
need to get out there, fly, and party!!!

Aloha!

I have a catering event on Saturday afternoon into the evening so I'm out for Saturday's events. If everything goes as planned and its flyable, I'll bail out early on Sunday and spend the day at Ridgely.

Thought ya'll like to know... while we're not scheduling any tandem lessons on Saturday night and Sunday morning, I will still be available for scooter towing.

Here's some quick info....
We've finished switching to a geared drivebelt so the winch does not slip now.
High tows are now a function of wind direction.
For Low/Slow training, we can accommodate most (if not all) wind directions.
Light winds work best for my landing training program.

Towing single surface gliders and novice double surface can be done via foot launch. Higher performance gliders are dolly launched.
Most people benefit most from at least two hours of landing training (one isn't enough to cover the material).
I like to keep classes down to three people.
Cost is $60/hr

We've had a slight change of plans for the fly-in this year. We'll be doing the 4th a week early. I just got back from picking up some 'sparklers', so we should have some fun in the evening too. If you are planning on attending, please let us know as soon as possible.

Thanks,

What are you going to blow up? Gawd, I wish I could be there (just to keep you bad-boys from blowing yourselves up; I would NEVER partake)

I'm out at Ridgely right now. Covered sky and hot! I've got RIch's Sport 2 set up with help from Yanni on the tips. My LitespeedS has a new home and owner - check out his video of his first two flights on it (Lookout Mt.). It wasn't getting the airtime it needed to be happy.....

I'm going to try and bring the Batwing out for Day 2 of the Fly-In. Weather looks flyable, although will doublecheck on Sunday morning to make sure that the winds are ramping up more than forecasted.

Got a couple of taxi rides on Rich's custom Sport 2. On the second one, Taxi found a thermal and worked it for me for about 20 minutes. We were drifting too far east (Taxi isn't a Litespeed after all) so I bailed towards the field, hoping to see the tandem glider still circling in something, but the passenger (I found out later) was close to barfing so Adam had to stop the circling. Good landing, thanks to Taxi. Has anyone ever blown on landing on a Sport 2??? It clouded over and there was a little sprinkle and enough threatening skies for most to break down. Cooled things off a lot and made it real nice for drinking beer.
About to head for Harry's for dinner.

Yeah, Christy! I spent the day in a windowless office with too much air conditioning. I broke a tip wand on a Sport 2 once while learning the come-in-fast-in-ground-effect-and-flare-big technique - but it was a stylish landing. - Hugh

I'll be there tomorrow! Hitting the road early AM, maybe 8-ish. Bringing frisbees and
field cones, in the hopes of convincing enough people to play some ultimate after
flying. Also a stunt kite. Cooler's stuffed. Wine and beer are chillin'. Now if only
I could haul all that stuff on my bike, and save some gas money!

Any chance the festivities will be postponed in case of rainy/windy/thunder, etc?

David, David, David....some of the best times at ridgely fly-ins happened on account of crappy weather. Maybe you can't come and are hoping it gets postponed, but if instead you're waffling, don't ever blow of fly-ins because of weather!

Ya shoulda been there! Ridgely was great today. HOT on the ground.... but sweet in the air. Four HG flights for me-- broke a week link on the first. Got 30 minutes on the second. Took a sled in Karen's glider for the third and then flew Cavanaugh's glider for about 90 minutes topping out at about 4K for my last flight. I think everyone stayed up on at least one of their flights. After dinner, I took a couple of PG scooter tows and then kited around a bit with Janni, Carlos and Danny. Great real fireworks watching a thunderstown pound Arlington after dark.

Lot's of airtime and a couple of great flights. Gave the crowd one ugly tow to watch  when I decided to go without the fin, scary enough for me not wanting to repeat it. I'm definitely not there yet, wish we had smaller fins for a more gradual transition, perhaps I'll make my own bunch. I wouldn't mind the fin at all if it didn't make my glider so trucky.
Great party, great fireworks and great people. Kiting Matthew's PG was a lot of fun, too. Gooooood times. Many thanks to the Highland crew for putting this one together.
