Sunday 6/1 Flying

Post by eggzkitz »

Lots of HG talk about pulpit vs. woodstock for Sunday. I'll be leaving N Virginia for one or the other Sunday around 1030... anyone else game?

I am game for either one as well. I will plan to get there around 11 or so depending on which site.

Right on...

This morning's forecast already looks different, so we'll need to watch it. As of now, later in the day looks more promising (if it doesn't OD) and south looks better than north (WS over Pulpit). But the wing direction and speed looks reasonable. I think Bacil's magical analysis of the pressure map may be a good indicator.

BTW- great work on the record flight last weekend. don't you start seeing in shades of yellow after that long?

So what's the verdict for paragliding today? Pulpit looks to be a little strong -- Woodstock, or is that a little dicey as well?

Took a couple pics of the PG'ers who were able to get aloft
between rain showers and get some airtime. But I don't
recognize the canopies, so if someone can help me out on
their names I'd appreciate it!

Very Strange day. Weather stations everywhere else reported strong NW or West winds. Totally dead at Woodstock most of the day with overcast skies and three rain showers. I launched my PG sometime around 5 and scratched my way above the ridge for a few minutes. Very cross from the SW. Saw a cloud open up with rain across the valley and went out to land. Got bagged up and hid in Steve's car just before the rain hit. It only lasted ten minutes. Dave from Texas (pictured blue and yellow glider) had the flight of the day in his PG with about a half hour and Josef, pictured blue, white and black PG, got about 20 minutes. Ellis would have gotten up except that she had a stick stuck in her brake lines. Hang 2s Dan T. and Kathy both had excellent launches.

Strange day indeed. Sitting in the valley near Strasburg I watched lightning arc to the north while it was patchy blue overhead and doomsday looking to the south. The winds were moderate in general, but the thermal winds pulling underneath the development were intense. I was mountain biking on signal knob behind launch and the trees were groaning with swirling as collecting air moved upward into heads that looked like they went up 5-7k feet in places, maybe more. Kudos for Texas Dave for actually flying...

I think we all should have taken a hint when, early in the afternoon, was saw a sailplane fly by BELOW LAUNCH! The pilot subsequently put down in a field behind our landing zone. If one of those guys can't stay up, then I think that the rest of us are toast.
