WS Minimums (the entry level double surface glider)

Post by Dan T »

Rance, you might have noticed that nobody commented on the glider type. On a
light wind day it isn't unusual to see a single surface or pulse class double
surface glider at or near the top of the stack. The nominal sink rate that
these gliders might give up to a more efficient wing is largely overcome by the
fact that they can fly slower and therefore consistently closer to the core.
On the right day your glider is no handicap in getting high with the best of
them. It almost invariably comes down to experience, skill and largely
persistance. Your biggest disadvantage on the ridge is that you cannot safely
drift as far back as the fast ships can. Your slower speed will require you to
leave that thermal of the day sooner. All in all it's not much of a handicap
and even less of a loss in the fun factor.

Have fun,
fly safe,
Dan T.

PS Woodstock looks encouraging tomorrow.
