Highland Sat AM Apr 26

Post by markc »

I'm planning to head to Highland to knock off some towing rust,
crack-o-dawn early tomorrow. Looks ESE and only a small chance
of rain up through at least noon. Come on out if you haven't been
towing for a while!

Looks like it should be good early till the thunderstorms show up sometime in the afternoon.
Out the window looks flyable already (we expected more low cloudcover)
It's meant to boom and blow out after mid day... light winds expected till then (on the ground and aloft according to blipspot).

It was an unexpectedly good day at Highland yesterday! Arrived at 8:30 to partly sunny skies and
light ENE winds of about 5mph. Set up in a hurry, figuring things could only go downhill.... But the
low clouds broke up even more and we had mostly sunny skies by late morning. I cranked out four
pattern tows, as conditions gradually swung more NE @ 5-10 .

After Tom McG, Joe G, Steve K, Victor & Bob, and one other pilot I haven't met yet had arrived,
things started looking possibly soarable. Winds were more 10 than 5, with some occasional near-90
cross cycles, but we all got several flights mid-day. My first was a sledder, but I managed to hold on
for about 30 minutes on my second. Very nice to be back into the towing groove, though I think I
need a few more to truly be de-rustified.

I think Tom might have also gotten close to a half-hour on his last attempt; I think Steve may have
found a thermal for a short flight. It was tough, the wind was breaking the thermals up as the
day progressed; quite a noticeable headwind as I went onto final for my last flight. Joe did a tandem,
figuring that his first return solo flight should wait for a calmer day.

By 3pm the winds were more E/ESE, and conditions were blown out. It really started ramping up,
to the point that tearing down the gliders was a pain in the neck. But still a perfectly sunny, gorgeous
day, not a cloud in sight. Who woulda thought?

Thanks to all the Highland gang, for running things as smoothly as always. Great to see everone
after so long!
