Sport Class at Highland Comp

Post by Paul Tjaden »

Lauren and I are considering lobbying Adam and Sunny to include a Sport Class at there comp but wanted to get an idea of how much local interest there might be. There are no firm rules about what a Sport Class is but it would probably be limited to recreational pilots on kingposted gliders and the tasks would be easier. I have NOT discussed this yet with the organizers but would be glad to approach them if there is sufficient interest.

Danny Brotto liked the idea. What say you?

Paul

p.s. You can't believe how much fun it is!!!!

Yes, there is interest!!! Will the comp fee be less? How stringent
will instrumentation requirements be? Do we have to wear full-face
helmets? (Kidding, kidding...) - Hugh
P.S. I was also thinking about volunteering at least part of the time.
Do they still need volunteers?

I'd be interested, but will be out of town the first weekend. Also, I
probably don't even meet the minimum requirements for the sport class.
Maybe next year.

Sounds like Eeyore - or that depressed robot in Hitchhikers Guide to
the Galaxy. Cheer up, Ralph! Maybe there could be a single-surface
division... - Hugh

Sure you do!? Actually I think you have to be a hang 3 with approval to compete from the meet director, and know how to aerotow before the meet.?Also, you have to have or borrow a GPS so you can download your track logs at the end of the day. The only emphasis competing is on safety; making sure you have an LZ --- which is easier at Highland than anyplace.? And I think having?a cell phone is good for retrieve. The idea of the sport class is to teach you and give you tasks that you might actually be able to do.
At FL Ridge,?the sport comp?was informal. David Glover asked?us competitors what?we thought would be "doable" tasks. Also, the regular divisions had start times, but the sport class would just have our times start automatically when?we crossed out of the start circle (typically, a imaginary circle?2 or 5 miles around the field). So?we just flew.
The gaggles I saw at Florida Ridge were less than I've run into free flying. Seriously, I didn't circle with almost anyone. The last day I was with a gaggle but?I was at the bottom after my weak link break. I couldn't even see the others unless I looked WAY up. Climb poorly enough and you don't have to deal with them at all--- ha ha, I should know!
It really ended up being simple and non-stressful. They also had the rules so the sport class launch window was open the whole day. If you want to fly after everyone, you can. The last day I was sure I had it won, but it turned out Jono launched at 5 PM, when it was really fat lift, and he flew within 5 miles of goal! He bombed out the first time he launched a mile and a half away, but he returned and set up and flew again (he was in the lead the 1st 2 days).
Anyhow. I've had a few people email me. If you have to be gone, you do, but it would be really fun to fly with you! What about Spark? He could spank us all! And what about Judy? She had some really good XC flights before, I know. It could be good.

Getting way ahead of us. After we see how much interest we have, we need to get the OK from Adam and Sunny.

I've already entered the contest with my UltraSport. A sport class for the
rest of us pilots would be fun and I cast my vote for it.
