Select and download restricted airspaces for your GPS Vario

Post by Spark »

Rick Maddy, a local pilot here in Colorado developed an application may be useful to those with Flytec or Bruniger GPS varios.

Quote below:

Select and download restricted airspaces for your hang gliding or paragliding GPS/variometer.

I'd like to announce a website I created to help those with Flytec 5030/6020/6030 or Bräuniger IQ Compeo+/Competino+ varios.

The site is a Google Maps app that overlays various airspaces. At the moment there is data for North America, South America (Argentina and Brazil), most of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

You can use a selection tool on the map to select an area of the map you plan to fly then download a file with just that data. This file can then be uploaded to your supported vario using FlyChart.

This is a big improvement over the state level files I announced a month or so ago.

Let me know if you run into any issues or if there is no data for your neck of the woods. I've tested this with a limited number of browsers. If you are having an issue please let me know what operating system (Windows XP, Vista, Linux, etc.) and browser and version. If you are using Firefox 3 upgrade to beta 5 for better performance dragging around the selection area (SVG support is in place in beta 5).

Oh yeah - the URL:

1. Use the standard Google Map controls or the custom zoom control to view an appropriate area you plan to fly.
2. Use the selection tool to select the desired airspace segments.
3. Click on the OpenAir button to download the data file to your computer.
4. Use FlyChart to upload the data to your vario.

BTW - the color coding and line thickness I used on my map roughly matches those used on an actual sectional. For those not as familiar it goes as follows:

Class A - not on map. All airspace 18,000'MSL and up.
Class B - Medium blue. Around big airports like Denver.
Class C - Medium magenta. Around smaller city airports like Colorado Springs.
Class D - Dashed blue. Around small controlled airports like Centennial or Eagle.
Class E - Dashed magenta. Around some uncontrolled airports like Hayden. Also adds to some Class D airports like Centennial.
Restricted and Prohibited - Thick blue. Near Colorado Springs. On real sectional the borders are drawn with hash marks.
MOA - Think magenta. There's a big MOA between La Veta pass and Colorado Springs. On real section the borders are drawn with hash marks
