Wills Wing Fly-In

Post by Paul Tjaden »

Last nights Bar-B-Que at Wallaby was the official end to the Wills Wing Fly-In. The timing for this party could not have been better. After lots of un-flyable weather during the last month, Wed. thru Sat. ranged from damn good to Wow! Just seeing old friends from all over the USA would have been great but getting to share cloud base with them made it even better. Because we are usually competing during this time of the year, this is the first time Lauren and I have been able to attend and I'm extremely glad that we finally got the opportunity. As Rob Kells said last night, we were a part of the largest hang gliding get together ever over the last four or five days and I wouldn't have missed it. Of course, if you're thinking about a new wing, this is the best place ever to try out all the new WW offerings. Personally, I stayed away from trying the new T2C's cause I was afraid I might like them and then what would I do? I'm just getting cozy with my Combat! Anyway, I can't guarantee that the weather will be as good next time, but if any of you can get loose next year, you might want to consider a trip to Wallaby Ranch. We'll be looking for you.

Great friggin' week! At Wallaby over the course of the demo days, there were over 650 aerotows. Though many of the pilots were trying new gliders or were inexperienced, only 2 downtubes were broken, and there were NO injuries. One day I flew 7 tandems in the morning (at Quest), then launched the Litespeed from Quest and flew down to Wallaby. It was so easy I flew home, too (which I shouldn't have, because I ended up DRIVING my glider down to Wallaby).
The conditions were fabulous!
One day in the LZ at Quest I ended up landing with Judy Hildebrant, my old buddy. Kari, Richard Hays (who gave me my footlaunch rating), Pete L. and JR (poor baby, he got sick and missed out on most of the fun) came for festivities and fun, too. And almost everyone else in the world.
WW gave an incredible presentation of they started hang gliding in these home-made bamboo and duck-taped contraptions and how they so quickly evolved into gliders very close to what we now fly. I got drunk one night and had Rob Kells sign my ass instead of a book.
I lent Linda S my Pulse and she flew it to Quest one day along with Mario. Mario is our Italian friend who grew up at the base of Monte Cucco and is arranging for the accomodations for the US Women's Team that will fly in the World Championships there in July.
Guess what -- he took me sky diving yesterday!!! It is one sick deal to jump out of a plane at 11000 feet. We had a perfect landing. It's Linda's fault since she went first a few weeks ago and I couldn't let the cute little beeyatch outdo me. She came, too, to laugh at me and take pictures.
I started my instructor's clinic with Paul Voight today. Rhett, Dustin, Flavia, Niel and Mitch are doing it, too. After it's done we start our tandem clinic. Besides being a sky god Paul's actually nice, too.
Ew, gotta go. Hopefully we'll see some of you soon. We may boogie up to the Spectacular as well as the East Coast Championships. If you haven't done the Kitty Hawk dune comp you should -- it's a blast.
