2008 Regionals Contest Announcement

Post by lplehmann »

A fine snowy Saturday to you all,

I confess that Pittsburgh’s lingering winter has almost extinguished any conscious thought of hang gliding. As a result, until prompted by Bacil and John Simon, I had utterly forgotten about the Regionals, the traditional starting date for which will be this coming weekend, Saturday March 15. And now I am about to leave on a short trip to Chicago. As I don’t have time at the moment to amend the 2007 rules, I will do so when I get back.

Suffice it to say the contest will be the usual weekend-only, best three flights made between March 15 and Memorial Day Monday. Upon returning I will go over the rules and distribute them (for the benefit of the few who read them). As was the case last year, flying with a gps and downloading the flight’s tracklog can be an enormous benefit to your score. It is not, however, mandatory. Indeed, Nelson Lewis won last year’s the contest without doing so.

If you’d like to enter, you’ll find the form below. Just fill it in and mail it to me with a $15 check made out to my legal name of Lawrence Lehmann.

The Yearlong contest has no entry fee or requirement, but if you think you’ll go xc this year, fill out the form and send it to me as it serves as a reminder for me to contact you at the end of the year to find out what flights you might have achieved. Incidentally, I have mailed off the article of the 2007 Yearlong Contest, and, unsurprisingly, Nelson won that too. Here are the top ten finishers,

1 Lewis, Nelson Open Wills Wing T2-144 135 Tobacco Row, VA
2 Bunner, Larry Open Wills Wing Talon-144 123.1 The Sac, PA
3 Simon, John Open Aeros Discus/Moyes Litespeed 109.8 Ridgely, MD
4 Kepler, Steve Open Moyes Litesport 4 109 Tobacco Row, VA
5 McGowan, Tom Open Moyes Litespeed 107 Woodstock, VA
6 Harper, John Open Moyes Litespeed 103.3 Tobacco Row, VA
7 Lehmann, Pete Open Wills Wing T2-155 101.9 Templeton, PA
8 Tjaden, Paul Open Wills Wing T2-155 93 Ridgely, MD
9 Halfhill, Pat Sport Wills Wing Sport2-175FB 78.9 Templeton, PA
10 Proctor, Dave Open Moyes Litespeed 69.8 The Sac, PA

I hope that you all get some long ones this year,
Pete Lehmann

Yes!
Thanks Pete with 2 "n"s... Now if I can just get my wife to drive for me I'll fly more than 3 flights this spring.

This is a great contest that anyone can earn a trophy plaque in. Mostly what you need is at least a little XC experience and a lot of persistence on the weekends. I encourage everyone with XC experience to consider signing up. The plaques make great conversation pieces on your wall and most importantly the contest will motivate you to get out and fly more often. There are at least two flex wing classes so you don't need to be one of the big guns to score well in your own class.

And with that I'm predicting a great XC day this Sunday. Outlook is pretty good. If NW, Woodstock and Tobacco Row should see great XC flights. If more northerly, Peters, Woodstock, The SAC, or Raven's Haven should see the big flights.

Hey John,

You know, if you're going to fly on any days other than weekends and a couple of holidays, you have to get "two N's" blessing to use the flights for the contest. I had this problem years ago cause I had flexible work days. Talk to Pete, he'll splain it to you.

Yeah,
I told him about last year, this year seems worse... working all Sundays and some Saturdays in Mar... April may be better as I have Vacation. I only managed 3 contest flights last year, hope to do better this time around.
