Repack Option

I called Chambersburg Skydive this morning to see about getting my reserve repacked for spring. I talked to JR, He is the Master Packer there and he is getting ready for spring as well. He said he could do it. He keeps it for a week, airs it out and packs it. 50.00 skins. Mine needs done. 717-264-1111 JR.

remind him that HG is deployed at much lower speeds, so we do things a bit differently. Unless he's repacked HG before, he should look at the packing style carefully before opening it up.

CHGPA is still planning on a repack.

I can do mine in about an hour in my living room.
Fluffing and test deployment are extra time but the fun and experience is worth it.
I guess we should try to get it done sooner seeing the temps are rising.

Matthew? How many were interested in the first repack?

I'll check into some Rockville locations if you want.

Maybe a location near the mountains (Winchester/McConnelsburg) would be better for us non-towheads.

We had about 15 interested in the repack. Several we're going to away that weekend. So, we could propbaly get 20 to attend from HG and PG comunity. Looking at an early summer repack at one of the flight parks. Will keep you posted.

I just got back from dropping my harness off. They know parachutes! J.R. even showed me my chute in his book he had right there. Freeflight 22 gore PDA.I may have it by this weekend. Nice place they have there.He repacks sailplane, skydive, PG and HG . He showed me all of them. It turns out his son Jamie is a P2. I talked to him. He flies down in Virginia. He goes to VT. He sure would like to fly this site called the Pulpit.It's that one behind that bar , right? I said I may know an observer that could help him out.

I jumped there a few times trying to get certified.....
Ran out of money.. ... but none the less a great time.

Does anyone know if you can attach your reserve deployment bag in such a way that you don't loose it during a deployment.

I though may be it could be attched to just ONE of the small loops at the crest of a pull down apex. Those loops are the first to get packed into the bag and the last to exit during deployment. The bag would just flop around up there much like the pilot chute of a free fall chute. I though it could be attached with the saftey string that used for free fall chutes ... that stuff is supposed to break a like 5 lbs force so the reserve could break away from the bag if it had to.

It would be a bummer to have a "good" deployment and no damage to body or glider and be grounded only because you don't have a spare bag and it takes a week to get a new one.

It seems that with a PG you could have multiple deployments and keep on flying ... like at a manuvers clinic.

I've heard of people messing with this before and heard some horror storries about it too. The consensus was just get multiple bags... best of both worlds.

For what it's worth... I've seen my share (and your share, and your share) of deployments and all of the PG guys recovered the bags. HG deployments are typically much higher altitudes, so sometimes they do, sometimes not.

betty pfeiffer has said that she prefers that people lose their bags so they have some incentive to send the parachute to her for inspection. I'm not sure, but I think she'll give some discount for the chance to look at a parachute deployed in flight with a report.

yea ... it does seem a little foolish to risk it for the cost of a bag. But with both my HG harness (rotor) and PG harness (woody valley velvet) you loose the handle too ... which is specific to harness model(s). You might be able to borrow a bag from a buddy, but it will be a lot harder to get the handle on short notice.

Maybe I should order replacement handles now. Are they like down tubes ... as long as you have a spare in the truck you never break one?

Don't do it--attaching the bag to the chute will only add complications to the staged deployment and increase the probability of entanglement or some kind of drag weirdness.

Getting a replacement bag shouldn't be that hard--in the case of a Rotor or race-style harness you need to have as short a handle as possible--so do not simply loop the harness chute handle around the bag's loop/handle if it is fairly lengthy. What will happen is that you will not have the necessary leverage to pull that tightwad clear of the container when the shit hits the fan. Most bags will have a connector strap sewn across the face of the bag, you can simply cut off the loop/handle of the bag and loop the harness handle around that in order to achieve a short length handle/bag connection.

Pg reserves, like the metamorhosi Conair, often use a different deployment philosophy from an HG ala High Energy. Emphasis is given on getting the whole chute in the air as quickly as possible as opposed to the clean staged deployment ala High Energy. They will often have 4 flap fall-away bags that get the entire chute in the airstream right after hucking it.

I use both types of systems, and they each have pluses and minuses. When doing a repack it's also a very good time to check the harness attachment points, in particular how the harness riser main, back-up and chute attachments are doing. I've been amazed at how poor condition these things can be in as a result of just a little friction--especially in the case of a race-style harness with a slider bar in the backplate.
