Folks,
Every year for as long as I have been in the sport Pete Lehmann has sponsored two Region 9 XC contests. The first contest usually starts in mid March and ends at the end of the Memorial Day weekend. the second one is the year long contest he has referenced in the thread below. Both of these are a great way to get motivated to get out and get in some miles.
Unfortunately, much like our sport itself, the participation in these contests has been waning over the past few years. We need some new blood to get things restarted. In an effort to encourage those of you who are XC ready, I am offering to mentor any qualified H3 during the contest.
I'll offer to discuss XC conditions with you at launch, identify an appropriate exit altitude, work with you on the radio to get you up and over the back, and be sure that you aren't stranded if you land out.
You should be a hang III and ideally have at least some experience landing in fields other than the primary. You also must at least request entrance into Pete's springtime contest. He reserves the right to determine whether you have sufficient experience to participate in that contest.
The Pulpit is an ideal location for achieving your first over-the-back XC. Once you reach the valley the landing fields are plentiful, large and flat. Selecting a suitable landing field and landing direction is the most critical safety aspect of flying XC and the abundance of good fields makes it an ideal learning location.
I don't claim to be the best XC pilot in the club but I have a bunch of trophy plaques and I've made the crossing to High Rock several times, so I think I have something to offer then new XC pilot. If you are interested email me or simply respond to this post.
If you write me please give me your real name. I can't put a face on all the "handles" on here.
Thanks,
Dan T
