It's gonna be good. Who's on board?
As predicted the flying was less than epic. Mike Lee flew first so he could take Rhonda home. I followed a couple of hours later, still waiting for the promised afternoon winds. At various times it was raining paragliders. Janni had a real strong no-wind launch on his Sport 2. Glenn decided to break down to save the trip back up the road to get his truck.
Randy Weber was the only local hang glider pilot to show up. No one, whether vertebrate or invertebrate, did better than a sledder.
But, it was a beautiful day in the mountains, and I had a great time anyway. The LZ had a very friendly cat following us around. He was orange and white and looking regal while sitting on Laszlo's orange and white paraglider as he was trying to fold it up.
I was happy my pseudo 4-wheel drive vehicle made it up the mountain without too much drama. But, I wasn't carrying any passengers, either.
So, interesting. Those who stayed at home made the right decision. And those who came out might've made the right decision, too.

IT SUCKED. But I did a real good job launching and landing this ridiculously tiny glider in the nasty primary, so I'm kinda proud of that. I'm off to BlueSky tomorrow.

Wow, it was great. The sun was out, blowing straight in on launch at 10 mph, ramping up to 15 when cycles came blazing through. Mark and I were the only ones there to our surprise. Well, some find kayaking more interesting I guess. Anyway, Mark went first, turned right towards the bowl and climbed above the ridge real quick. Came back to launch to tell me it was real good so I, too, went to find myself climbing. A mixture of big fat thermals and ridge lift kept us well above the ridge, Mark eventually hooked something that took him to 3000' over. I couldn't get higher than 1500' no matter what I tried. Still a great flight, airtime logged: 1 hour. Perfect no step landing, I could not be happier. And the best, it was so warm, I flew wihout gloves and just my shirt on.
Knew that conditions were going to be decent when we were south
of Gainesville on Rt 29, looking at totally clear skies to the southwest,
with some wave clouds setting up over the Blue Ridge. So much for
the 90+% cloudcover of the early morning forecast!
Winds in the LZ were out of the west, but when we got up top a bit after
2pm, there were cycles of 10+ coming straight in. Definitely PG-soarable,
and looking pretty good for HG too.
Major rush to set up, and then I headed to launch at 3pm (we flipped
a rock to see who would go first). Conditions in the air were bouyant
and REALLY nice: no heavy layers, no gloves, near 60 degrees.... What
a treat for this time of year!
I had maybe 45 minutes of flight time, but I doubt I had the 3k over
that Janni claims. But even so, Goldilocks definitely said "And this site
is just right!"
Great day, good flying, a hike back up at the end of the day, and cold
brews to enjoy while watching the sunset. Nice.
