Recommendations Sought for Cockpit & Camera

Post by charlieg »

I'm looking to upgrade my flying set up with a cockpit to hold my vario/GPS, my radio and a camera. Are there other things I would want to put in a cockpit that would drive which one I'd buy?
Any recommendations regarding which cockpit to buy and/or where to buy it?
Also, I've got a small digital camera but I think I'll want one with larger buttons (to work with gloves), and possibility some additional features. Besides, my current one is a little dated. Any recommendations on cameras? What are nice features to have for our flying applications? Zoom? Stabilization? Rugged case?
Thanks,
Charlie

I'm using the Sol cockpit, available from Steve at

http://www.thewindyplanet.com

It has a large storage area that I use for ballast and other stuff.

The top area has enough room for my vario/gps/thermal snooper and a camera.

Charlie,
I think the Sol flight deck is what I have, if you remember seeing it. Contains all your fragile electronics in a little padded "purse" for when you're catching a ride back up to launch in the back of a pickup. Attaches to your harness in the chest/waist region for easy viewing. I find it better to put the radio elsewhere (in a pocket of my harness) so transmissions don't drive my vario batty. I keep vario and GPS mounted to an aluminum plate that's part of the mounting system for my hang-glider so I can cross-deck them easily between HG and PG. This also enables me to tie the instruments firmly to the little straps in the flight deck with the lanyard of the vario - rather than rely on velcro. The large pocket on the underside of the flight deck is a good place for water bottle, gloves, etc.
