Woodstock Sunday

Very nice day at Woodstock. Bacil was first to launch at just before 1:00 into light cycles with Bruce launching next at about 1:30. It picked up a bit after Bacil launched and was mostly straight in at about 10-12 mph when I launched at 1:35. Big strong thermals up to 4300' over launch. The air was a bit textured but not bad. It was pretty cold up high though. Flew for 1.5. Absolutely a beautiful day, still lots of green on the mountain. I heard that Bruce made it a bit past Harrisonburg and Bacil flew up to Strausburg and back for a nice 2 hour flight. Others that flew were Steve, Gary, Carlos, John, Yanni and a couple of others.

Flew Steve's Sport 2 later in the day. Thanks Steve, you're the man.
It had turned strong and N cross to my surprise. Pointed staight into the wind I was goig backwards at minimum sink and sitting still at speeds around trim, so I guess it was blowing 20 mph 1500' over. Stayed for like an hour or so and used the opportunity to become aquainted with the glider.

I'll just add a little about my flight that made it quite challenging. Taking off in light conditions just before 1PM, the north cross on the ridge made it some work to get up above the ridge. It took 3 passes by launch and a run up to the NE facing bowl of Cox Ridge before I got above. Dolphin flew up to Southfork, maintaining a couple hundred over in the rotory lift. Hit a big pothole and was scraped off the ridge. Headed out to land at Southfork, resigned to my fate of a quick half hour flight and an out landing 5 miles from launch. Hit some lift off of the NE finger next to Southfork and clung to it. The lift was very light, but I got back to 2000' MSL, around ridge height there. Saw 3 redtails climb an escalator of lift along the ridge treeline from 200' below the top to a couple hundred over just to my left. Beelined it over to the area and the escalator was still running! Got on it 100' below the ridgetop, rode it up to 300' above the ridge, and I was on my way again to Signal Knob. It's neat to have our feathered friends save one's flight. Got up to the antenna and hung out over the rockpiles in choppy lift to 3000' MSL. Decided to head back to the main LZ, cruising out in the valley and checking out the fingers. Seemed like each finger was pumping out lift. Got to 4400' MSL and it was a little chilly. Back around launch I lost a bunch and decided to land since I was fatigued from the previous day's events and the cold made the fatigue even worse. The windsock in the main LZ helped big time when I landed. Mucho thanks to whomever planted the windsock.
